From the Capital-Journal:
SILVER LAKE — There wasn’t anything glamorous about Silver Lake’s 43-28 girls victory over arch rival Rossville at home on Tuesday night.
But the manner in which the Eagles secured the victory — tough rebounding, solid free-throw shooting and a strong defense — sure was a thing of beauty in the eyes of Eagle coach Loren Ziegler.
“We struggled shooting the ball tonight ... but I love how we compete,” Ziegler said. “We’re playing as hard as we can and it’s not always pretty, but we’re rebounding, we’re defending and tonight we made our free throws. We’re doing a lot of the little things we need to do to win.”
Silver Lake’s defense was at its best in the third quarter. After Caila Hill scored in the the first 1:15 of the second half to tie the game 20-20, the Eagles’ zone defense clamped down.
Rossville went scoreless for the rest of the quarter and didn’t make another field goal until Hill scored at the 4:38 mark of the fourth quarter. By that time, the Eagles had opened up a double-digit lead, closing the third quarter on a 12-0 run.
Silver Lake only made two field goals in the quarter, but hit 7 of 8 free throws in the period. On the night, the Eagles were 24 of 31 overall, masking a rough shooting night from the field where they made just 9 of 32 shots overall and 1 of 13 3-pointers.
Silver Lake also out-rebounded Rossville 29-13, getting 10 offensive boards.
Daryn Lamprecht led Silver Lake (3-2 overall, 2-1 in Mid-East League play) with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Jayme Lindstrom added 11 points.
Hill led Rossville (2-4, 0-1) with 10 points and the Bulldawgs were just 12 of 35 from the field and 4 of 15 at the free throw line.
