McCullough and McKenzie Receive Awards
Tayler McCullough and Nick McKenzie, of Rossville, received the Outstanding Lifeguard award at the Kansas Recreation and Park Association’s annual meeting last month in Manhattan. McCullough and McKenzie were recognized for their dedication and perseverance to the Rossville swimming pool, which was built in 2007 as a result of a community effort begun by the duo when they were in grade school. After McCullough and McKenzie started a recycling campaign to raise money for a pool, the community formed a task force (which included the instigators) in 2003, and the $400,000 it raised plus bond money from the city was used to build the pool. Later, when McCullough and McKenzie were old enough, they were hired as lifeguards by Shawnee County Parks and Recreation.
Lambotte Wins Third Straight State Title
From CJ Online:
HAYS — The buzz began two years ago, and for a normal freshman, it might have been a lot to handle.
But Rossville’s Tagen Lambotte is a different breed of wrestler, and he continued to prove that Saturday at the Class 3-2-1A state championships at Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Lambotte, now a junior, continued his quest of four state championships with a title at 145 pounds — his third crown in as many years.
“A lot of people have been saying a lot of things,” he said. “But at the end of the day, you still have to show up and do it.”
Lambotte burst onto the scene as a mere freshman, winning the title at 135 pounds. So began the buzz of a possible four-time state champ.
“He’s not your average kid,” said Rossville coach Curt Brecheisen. “He sets a goal, and he works his butt off to get there. He’s a kid that’s the first one there and the last one out — by hours, not just minutes.”
Lambotte followed that up with a title at 145 as a sophomore, then won another crown Saturday at the same weight with a dominating 20-8 victory against Sedgwick senior Nic Johnson.
“It means I’m 75 percent of the way there,” Lambotte said.
This year’s tourney might have been his most dominating. He won his first match Friday with a pin in 1:51, then followed it up with a 20 second pin in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals awaited undefeated Hoisington senior Chance Demel.
“In a lot of people’s eyes, it was a big match,” said his older brother, Cody Lambotte, who sits in the corner with Brecheisen for the 145-pounder’s matches. “For him, I’m not going to say it wasn’t a big match, but I think he feels like no one trains harder than him so why should he not get results like that. It’s not an arrogant thing.”
Lambotte made Demel look like a rag doll on the way to a 14-5 decision. And the final score wasn’t indicative of how much Lambotte (41-1) controlled the match.
“He’s done a good job of that all year long,” Brecheisen said. “He’s had only one match end the wrong way, but that guy was a quality opponent, too.”
Lambotte’s lone loss was to a wrestler from Missouri, but no one in Kansas could hang with the junior this year.
That’s a big reason why he’s a favorite to win a fourth state title, something not easily accomplished in any classification.
Just ask Mat Gilliland, a former four-time state champ in 3-2-1A who now is an assistant coach at his alma mater, Hoxie.
“I know he works extremely hard,” said Gilliland, who accounted for Cody Lambotte’s lone two losses at state in 2002 and 2003. “The way he wrestles is more at the collegiate level, to me, just watching than it is at the high school level. The way he moves, the way he’s on the head and the way he ties. It seems to me he’s kind of heads and shoulders above everybody in the high school level right now.”
Only problem is Lambotte doesn’t see it that way. Instead, he’s continuing to better himself with a solid schedule during the offseason.
“I want to be the best,” Lambotte said matter-of-factly.
And despite his third title in a row and the possibility of a fourth in 2014, Lambotte isn’t about to rest anytime soon.
“I think it grows for people looking from the outside in,” his brother Cody said. “But for him, he just loves to compete. To him, he just enjoys competing. Kind of like that semifinal match, a lot of people looked forward to that matchup. The kid was undefeated and hadn’t been take down this year. For him, he looks forward to those kind of matches at this stage. People always ask him about the pressure, and he always tells them he doesn’t get nervous. He trains a lot, works year-round. I think he feels like he puts the time in, and things will take care of itself on the mat.”
Early in Saturday’s title match, Johnson tried to tie up Lambotte to keep the match close. It worked for a bit.
Lambotte didn’t get his first takedown until 23 seconds remained in the first period. By the time the period ended, though, he led 4-1.
It was 12-4 after the second, and all of Johnson’s points came by Lambotte allowing him to escape.
Four more takedowns came in the final period to set the 20-8 margin.
“We’ve seen that a lot where they’ve tried to hold on to him and tie him up and keep it close,” Brecheisen said. “He just gets stronger as it goes on. That’s his goal is to work six hard minutes and see if anyone can hang with him.”
For three years, no one at state has been able to do that.
What happens next year, nobody knows.
“It’s hard not to; it’s in your mind,” Lambotte said about thinking about a fourth title. “But at the same time, you can’t think like that. You have to think about one practice at a time, one warmup at a time.”
Lambotte was one of three Bulldogs to place at state, helping Rossville finish ninth in the team standings.
Norton ran away with another title, accumulating 129.5 points. Hoxie was second with 97, followed by Plainville in third with 83. Atchison County was fifth with 62.5.
Sophomore Nick Reesor was fifth for Rossville at 152, while senior Cody Cooper was fifth at 285.

RHS Wabaunsee Boys Basketball
From CJOnline:
For a program that hasn’t posted a winning season since 2005, victories seemingly can be tough to come by.
So it shouldn’t be a huge surprise just how tough it’s been for Wabaunsee’s boys to get to the 7-10 mark they’re sporting with three games left.
Of those seven wins, four have come on last-second shots. The latest of the Chargers’ fantastic finishes came Tuesday night when Nick Terrapin’s layup at the buzzer gave Wabaunsee a 41-39 win over visiting Rossville.
The buzzer-beating win was the second in 12 days for the Chargers over the Bulldogs. On Feb. 1, Nick Herren’s shot in the final seconds gave Wabaunsee a 55-54 win at Rossville.
“My heart’s doing good, but my goatee’s getting a little gray,” Wabaunsee coach Dustin Wilson joked. “It’s actually been a lot of fun honestly. We’ve just kind of been hanging around in those games and the calm and poise our kids have shown in instances where other teams would have panicked has been tremendous to see. You could just see it on their faces that they know they’re not out of it.”
With Tuesday’s game tied 39-39, Wilson called a timeout with seven seconds left to draw up a final play. With Herren already having beaten Rossville once, Wilson told his senior guard to “Get the ball and go make a play.”
When Herren got double-teamed he threw a pass cross-court that was intended for teammate Ethan Miller. Instead, Terrapin ended up snagging the pass and after fumbling the ball, he corralled it an laid it in at the buzzer for the winner.
It wasn’t Terrapin’s first game-winner of the season. He also hit a shot in the final seconds to give Wabaunsee a 42-40 win over Chapman in mid-January. AJ Wertzberger has also gotten in on the heroics, hitting a shot with 1.6 seconds left to give the Chargers a 58-57 win over Mission Valley last week.
“It’s nice because our two leading scorers are Herren and Shane (Flach), and it’s easy to key on those guys,” Wilson said. “With AJ and Nick willing to step up and make big plays, it just makes it hard to guard just those two guys in those situations.”
Wabaunsee has won three of its last four — all three wins coming in the final seconds. In all three wins, the Chargers also trailed in the fourth quarter, by as much as 11 in the first game with Rossville and to Mission Valley and by six in Tuesday’s contest.
“They probably do expect to win in that situation now that we’ve done it four times,” Wilson said. “When it was six points in the fourth quarter last night, every one of them was, ‘It was worse last time we played them. It was worse against Mission Valley.’ In the huddle, when we draw up a play, everyone’s locked in.”
Such victories can certainly provide a team with momentum and the Chargers will need it as they prepare to host a Class 2A sub-state in two weeks that will include Lyndon (17-1) and Marais des Cygnes Valley (16-1). Lyndon is ranked No. 2 in 2A and MdCV’s lone loss came to the Tigers.
“We want to play our best ball going into sub-state and we feel like we’re doing that,” Wilson said. “The kids are confident right now that we can compete with anybody we can play against. You put yourself in position to win games in the fourth quarter and you feel like you’ve got a chance.”

Rattlers Add Five KSU Players
The Rossville Rattlers are pleased to announce the signing of 5-players from Kansas State University.
Last season the Rattlers benefited from the talents of Matt Wivinis, Austin Fisher, Joe Flattery and Caleb Wallingford. For 2013, Wildcats Coach Brad Hill has sent a brand new group of players to hone their talents in summer wood bat baseball.
Lance Miles, SS, (The Woodlands, TX): A three-year letter winner for the Highlanders under head coach Ron Eastman, Miles earned all-district honors on three occasions, while he was named an all-state performer as a senior. He was selected as the all-county defensive player of the year at shortstop after setting The Woodlands' career fielding percentage record while also being selected for the Houston Area All-Star Game.
Alex Bee, C, (Chatham, IL): Alex played two years at University High in Normal, Ill., under his father, Greg Bee, before playing his final two years for Chatham High School. Bee was an all-state selection as a senior and earned all-conference accolades each year. He helped lead Chatham to a regional and section championship in 2011. Alex hit .433 with two home runs and 30 RBI as a senior, one year after hitting .373 with five homers and 34 RBI.
Levi MaVorhis, RHP, (Freeland, WA): Levi lettered three years for Archbishop Murphy led them to a 28-2 record and its first ever state championship in 2012. As a senior, he went 11-0 with a 1.65 ERA and three shutouts in 68 innings, while he also hit .437 with nine doubles, one home run, 31 RBI and a .538 on-base percentage. He was named the conference's player of the year and the Washington Class 2A Player of the Year and also earned MaxPreps All-America honors as a utility player. Levi led the squad to an 18-1 mark and a league championship as a junior in 2011, while the Wildcats were 27-3 and earned both league and district championships in 2010.
Braxton Wilks, LHP/OF, (Sugar Land, TX): Braxton is not currently on Kansas State's roster, as he is finishing his Senior year at Episcopal High School in Sugar Land, Texas. Wilks hit .350 last season for Episcopal and is a mainstay in the outfield, as he switched from left to center field. He signed a letter of intent with Kansas State University in August and will be a Wildcat next season.
Jake Fromson, RHP, (Lee's Summit, MO): Jake is not currently on Kansas State's roster, as he is finishing his Senior year at Lee's Summit High School. This past summer, Fromson posted a 2.21 ERA in 54 1/3 innings pitched for Building Champions of the Ban Johnson League in Kansas City.
