KWU Women Lose Semi-Final

STERLING – Trying to upset the unbeaten and No. 9 Sterling College Warriors (27-0) on their home court was a daunting enough task for the Kansas Wesleyan women in this tournament semi-final.  Sterling won 89-69 in the Saturday game.

Doing so after playing four games the previous seven days was a hill too steep for the KWU Coyotes to climb.

The Coyotes end the season with a 16-11 record after winning seven of their final nine games. Sterling advances to the title game against Tabor Monday night at Hartman Arena in Park City

Senior Amanda Hill from Rossville scored 13 points on 6 of 16 shooting.  She also had 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists.

Sophomore Caila Hill, also from Rossville had 6 points on 2 of 4 shooting and 2 of 2 at the free throw line.  Caila also had 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal and 2 assists.

Kendra Hurla Is State Champ

Froom The Capital-Journal:

SALINA — Rossville's Kendra Hurla and her coach Brandy Lowe watched Hurla's sub-state match with Paola's Kailyn Younger multiple times before Friday's Girls Division II State Wrestling Championships at Tony's Pizza Events Center.

Lowe and Hurla knew they had a plan to defeat Younger, who entered the championship match at 120 pounds ranked No. 1 and with a 26-1 record.

Hurla avenged a sub-state championship loss to Younger by pinning her in the second period to win her first state championship in her freshman season.

Hurla had her brother, Holden, looking down on her. Holden died on Jan. 1 (Holden Hurla Passes) and taught everything Kendra needed to know about wrestling. Holden was a three-time state qualifier at Rossville.

Will Dawgs or Eagles Get A State Champ?

From the Capital-Journal:

Every year since 2011, either Silver Lake or Rossville has come home from Hays with a Class-3-2-1A state champion. During that span, the programs have combined for 17 state champions overall.

To keep that streak alive this year, it might take an upset or two. No Eagle or Bulldawg is ranked No. 1 at their respective weight going to the state tournament.

But don't count them out just yet. Silver Lake's Kai Allen is a past state champion, capturing the 126-pound title in 2019. He finished runner-up last year, falling 1-0 in the 132-pound finals to Hoxie's Derek Johnson.

Allen is 37-3 this season and ranked No. 3 at 138 behind Oakley's Eric Cain (32-3) and Hoxie's Drew Bretz (40-3).

Eagle teammate Daigan Kruger tied the state record for pins with his 42nd at sub-state last week, improving to 47-1 on the season at 170 pounds. He's ranked No. 2 behind returning state champion Matthew Rodriguez, of Southeast-Saline.

Rossville's Layne Hurla, meanwhile, won district, regional and sub-state titles at 145 pounds, is 27-3 and ranked No. 3. Hoxie's Johnson, however, is 40-0 at 145 this season.

River Rescue For Dog

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Three fire departments worked together to rescue a dog from the Kansas River Monday afternoon.

Two people were walking along the river when their dog, Oskie, took off about 20 to 30 feet onto the ice near the Willard Bridge. The dog fell through into the water.

“She loved the snow and she thought it was solid ice, and it was not,” Oskie’s owner said. “There’s no way we would have been able to make it out there (to get her ourselves).”

The Shawnee County Fire Dist. #4 - Dover and Rossville Fire Departments were called to the scene, and Mission Township Fire was called in later for their expertise in water and ice rescues.

Dover Fire Chief Dirk Christian said the dog was sitting on a shelf of ice when they arrived.

Two ice rescue technicians were able to tie a rope around themselves and wade out in the river to rescue the dog. She was in the river for about 45 minutes, with the rescue itself taking half an hour.

“When you talk about pets, they’re members of our family,” Christian said. “We’d go out there for a whitetail deer. It’s the way we do it - as long as we can do it safe; as long as we can manage the risk and we’ve got the right personnel, and the right equipment, and we got time on our side.”

Oskie was sporting some frosty fur when she made it to shore, but by Monday evening, was warmed up and ready for her next adventure.

Golden Giants Back In Rossville

The Topeka Golden Giants will be back for the summer of 2021.

But it’s an entirely new look for the baseball club with major changes under a new ownership, owner J.R. Bond announced on Tuesday.

The Golden Giants won’t be calling Topeka home, instead moving their home games this season to Joe Campbell Stadium in Rossville. Bond said the main focus for the organization this summer will be on entertainment and fan experience.

“Our new branding, along with our partnership with the Rossville community, will allow baseball fans in Topeka to enjoy a true minor-league baseball experience,” Bond said in a news release. “We are very excited for the future of fans-first baseball in the Topeka area.”

Enhancements to the fan experience will include the addition of a beer garden, party deck and all-inclusive VIP packages. Several promotional nights have already been planned with an Opening Carnival Night on June 4 and a Bark at the Park Night on July 1.

Fans will also be able to participate in on-field competitions and be able to meet the new Golden Giant mascot. Games will also be broadcast on the Golden Giant TV app, which will be available on Amazon, Android, Roku and Apple TV app stores.

Jacob Kirmer will return for his second year as head coach of the Golden Giants with Holton native Justin Rieschick joining the staff as an assistant. Fans can visit www.goldengiants.us for roster, promotional schedule and season ticket packages. Single-game tickets go on sale in the spring.
