Silver Lake Sub-State quarterfinal
March 1 with Rossville playing at Jeff West at 7:00. 2022 KSHSAA Girls Ba High School Vs. Jefferson West High School
Rossville had four wrestlers competing at the 321A State Championships on Feb. 25 and 26. The team finished eighth of the 30 teams competing which is a fine showing considering they were outmanned by the other top teams that had as many as 8 wrestlers competing.
From the Capital-Journal:
SALINA – All she does is win, win, win.
On Thursday at the KSHSAA 4-1A girls state wrestling championships, Rossville sophomore Kendra Hurla had one of her few full matches of the season in the 120-pound weight class title match.
Hurla won her second straight state wrestling title at the girls state wrestling tournament at Salina's Tony's Pizza Events Center by a 3-0 decision over Pratt's Jadyn Thompson.
Hurla was ranked the No. 1 wrestler in the 120-poind class in the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association heading into the state tournament and had to battle through the second-ranked wrestler in the state in a championship contest that went the distance. The difference was a takedown in the first period and escape in the second after choosing the down position.
In addition, Hurla becomes the first girl in the Rossville girls wrestling program to be a two-time champion. That means something because the girls program at Rossville is only in its second year. Two for two for Hurla.
"It feels nice to stand back up on that podium," Hurla said. "I don't have any words for it. It's nice because that match I definitely worked for it."
Rossville wrestling coach Courtney Horgan said he and Hurla had talked about the pressure of repeating as a state champion. Last year, Hurla went 26-2 on her way to winning a state title as a freshman. From her journey as a manager in middle school to her finally joining and starting to wrestle, Horgan had high praise for the youngster.
"She's the best in the business, man," Horgan said. "I think there was some pressure on her that she put on herself, and that's part of the game. We talked a little bit about that pressure and how you handle that pressure, and she's done well with it. She really has."
Hurla finished the season with another medal around her neck and a perfect 42-0 record in her sophomore season along with 36 pins. She made the state tournament look easy too with takedowns in all three of her matches leading up the eventual to-the-distance championship bout.
"I'm so proud, man," Horgan said. "That girl works harder than anybody. We put her through the ringer in our rooms. She eats up every minute of it. This is well-deserved right here. She hasn't been through many six-minute matches this year, but I had no doubts that she was going to be fine gas-tank-wise because she works so hard. Nobody deserves more than that girl.
The biggest theme for the Rossville wrestling program is family. Hurla said a lot of people know the term is used all the time in sports but don't know the full meaning behind it when it comes to sports until they experience it.
"I'd say my team is the best family you can have, besides blood-related," Hurla said. "There in that room, you know that no one is getting out of work. So, no one is skipping around, and I think that really helps us grow together."
Horgan said when he asked his wrestlers what their favorite and least-favorite thing was about this season, he said the response for favorite was the family culture.
"We've got something pretty special in Rossville," Horgan said. "These guys love each other, they work hard for each other. They beat each other up in the room, but when practice is over, they're back to family."

ST. MARYS (KSNT) – Pam Sumner and Rita Muckenthaler have been to
all 50 states, thanks to K-State Athletics.
“I’m really on
a first-name basis with a lot of those people there,” 88-year-old Rita said.
Pam and Rita
might be K-State’s biggest fans.
“I’ve missed
probably two or three [games] since like 1983,” Pam said. “[Rita]’s probably
missed maybe four since 1989.”
They both got
degrees from K-State, and taught together in USD 321. In the 1980s, Pam wanted
to keep going to Wildcat football games, so Rita suggested they go together.
“We got
addicted when we went,” Rita said.
It snowballed
from there. The traveling best friends have been to every home football game
since 1991, plus 20 bowl games and about 75 percent of away games.
“We started
with her car, using her car,” Pam said. “Then, when I started driving, this is
about my third car we’ve gone through.”
There was one
game Pam missed that Rita still went to– the day of Pam’s dad’s funeral. Rita
went to the football game after the funeral because she knew Pam’s dad would
not want her to miss a game
Pam and Rita
also go to women’s basketball and volleyball games.
“You know how
many purple shirts I have?” Rita said. “I have drawers and drawers and drawers,
and they’re categorized. Long sleeve, short sleeve, sleeveless.”
They’ve
developed the perfect traveling system. Pam drives, and Rita pays for parking.
“I think going
to like Auburn, Marshall, USC, Stanford, to go to those iconic stadiums is just
awesome,” Pam said.
This duo will
keep visiting more iconic stadiums while visiting the new Big 12 teams.
“She’s my
second mother,” Pam said. “I’m like her daughter. We’re family more than
friends.”
Robert was born on November 1, 1929, to Russell W. and Lela A. (Ward) Cox at Emmett. He graduated from Delia High School in 1947 and served in the U.S. Army from 1947 until 1953. During his service in 1951, he married Agnes M. (Stum) Cox. He went to work for Goodyear, Wentz Equipment Co., and Kansas State University before retiring from the latter after 25 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Delia and the Sertoma Club in Manhattan.
Robert is remembered by his wife, Agnes of Topeka, his sisters, Marjorie (John) Houck, Galt, CA., and Carol Uhler, Fort Scott; his children, Juanita M. (Gabriel) Escobar, Topeka, and Ronald E. (Susan) Cox Hendersonville, NC; his four grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Phyllis Lundin,

Mary spent her childhood in the Delia/Rossville area, graduating from Rossville High School in 1950.
Mary married Charles Martin on August 30, 1951 in Topeka. They were married 66 years. Charlie proceeded her in death on February 10, 2017. Mary and Charlie enjoyed their four "girls", Peggy (Joe) Pistora, Karen (Terry) Hay, Mary “Diane” (Ron) Martinek and Nancy (Bob) Pfannenstiel, ten grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Mary was a wonderful mother and excelled at being a grandmother. In the early days, she spent many days at softball fields and at lakes fishing, camping and skiing. Shirley Jean (Walder) Roper Mitchell, Coweta, Okla., age 73, passed into the arms of Jesus on Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, at Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla., due to pneumonia.
She was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Holton, to Jesse and Louise (Schumacher) Walder. She was raised on a farm north of Delia.
Her grade school years were spent at High Prairie Country School north of Delia. She was baptized at the Lutheran church in Holton. She then attended Delia High School and was a member of the final graduating class in 1966. During high school she was a cheerleader. There were 13 individuals in this class. She worked for Hallmark Cards in Topeka for five years after graduation.
Shirley married Bill Roper on March 14, 1970. To this union were born two daughters — Tammi and Tara. Shirley and Bill managed Limestone Springs Ranch south of Soldier until 1984. They later divorced.
During this time, Shirley was active in East Grant Unit and Pleasant Valley Rustlers 4-H club. She helped many Jackson County kids with sewing, quilting, baking and craft projects. Gardening, reading, sewing, baking and visiting were her favorite pastimes along with raising her two daughters.
On Jan. 11, 1987, Shirley married Jim Mitchell, owner of Mitchell Custom Harvesting, of Soldier. Traveling from Texas, through Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota and Montana during wheat harvest and then back to Colorado and Texas for fall milo and corn harvest became an important part of her life until 1994, when they divorced.
She cooked, did laundry, went for parts and groceries and cooked some more. She was always trying out a new recipe and most were well-received by the hired hands. During this time, she also continued raising her daughters.
Her first grandchild, Keenan James Mitchell, was born in 1991. Being Grandma was the highlight of her every day. With the pending arrival of her second grandchild, Kylie Jean Mitchell, she did not like the long distance. She moved from Holton to Ulysses in 2000. She attended every school activity, ballgame and church event she could and was Keenan and Kylie’s biggest cheerleader.
Grandson Camden Noah Ripperger was born in 2004. Granddaughter Gracen Noel Ripperger arrived in 2006. They lived in Broken Arrow, Okla., and this distance was too far for Grandma. She was planning another move to be near Tara and family when in November 2012, she suffered a stroke. Many hours, days and weeks of rehabilitation, with much help from Keenan, lead to her being able to live on her own.
She moved to Coweta, Okla., in 2013, residing at Carriage Crossing senior apartments. During the past eight years, she has attended every school activity, ballgame and church event she could and was Camden and Gracen’s biggest cheerleader. Several of the kids’ friends affectionately named her Grandma Giggles.
Shirley is survived by daughter and son-in-love, Tammi and Bryan Mitchell, Ulysses; daughter and son-in-love, Tara and Jeff Ripperger, Coweta, Okla.; grandson Keenan of Wichita; granddaughter Kylie of Ulysses; grandson and granddaughter Camden and Gracen of Coweta; brother and sister-in-love Carl and Linda Walder, Delia; nephew Wade Walder, Delia; great-nephews Chase and Truitt Walder; special friend of more than 50 years Jan Desch; many cousins and many, many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Cremation has taken place. Services will be held in Broken Arrow, Okla., and Ulysses and burial in Holton, with dates and times to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Du Good Events, 107 N. Baughman, Ulysses, KS 67880; or Delia Community Pride, 412 Nora Ave., Delia, KS 66418.
