Marie (Smatla) DeVeney Passes Away

Marie (Smatla) DeVeney passed away yesterday, 22 April 2015,.  She was 1 of 8 children  born to Thomas & Marie (Juran) Smatla.   This leaves only one  remaining sibling --Lydia (Smatla) Carl.     In this family picture, taken in 1936 at the old "Joy Place"  West of Rossville.     Marie is on the  far-left,, in front of Lydia (Smatla) Carl, in the leaf-print dress.     With an 11-1 record, and most of  the wins in 5 innings or less,  the Lady Dawgs should have some impressive statistics to be listed in the Captial=Journal article about softball statistics.  However,  the team is not mentioned among the area leaders.

Lady Dawgs Win Marysville Final

     The Lady Dawgs continued their dominance on the diamond picking up a 14-3 win over Marysville in the night cap of their double header to up their record to 11-1 with their only loss being the 7-6 Manhattan game.  This second game required six innings to get the required 11 point lead for a "mercy win."
     Taylor Kirk and Lora Shinn led in hits with two each.  Britnee Zemek had two walks.  Taylor Brecheisen led the RBIs with four and Zemek had three.
     Amanda Hill pitched all six innings getting 28 first pitch strikes and ten strike-outs,  while allowing seven hits in the win.

RHS Softball Win Over Marysville

     The Lady Dawgs played a double header at home against Marysville and picked up an easy win in game one by a 14-3 score after five innings.
    Heidi Nitsch led the batters with four hits and Taylor Kirk was put on base three times with walks.     Taylor Kirk pitched the whole five game getting four strike-outs and 17 first pitch strikes while allowing five hits.

Lady Dawgs Thrash Manhattan 11-1

After losing their first game in a close 7-6 contest,  the Lady Dawgs bounced back for an impressive 11-1 win in five innings against Manhattan in the night-cap of their April 14 double header.
    Taylor Brecheisen led the batters with four hits while Breanna Hill led in RBIs with three.
    Amanda Hill was the winning pitcher going all five innings getting eight strike-outs and 12 first pitch strikes and allowing one run.

Horton Invitational Golf Tournament

    The RHS boys 4 man golf team won the Horton Invitational tournament on April 20th at the Lakeview Country Club, beating out Atchison (245), St. Marys (214), Norton (269) and Maur Hill-Mt. Academy (206) with an excellent (196).
    The Rossville team was composed of Gabe Marney (46 for 6th place),  Paul Steinke (47 for 7th place), Colby Hadsall (50 for 9th place), and Alex Bird (53).
     Each school fielded a 2 man team and 4 man team.  Some of the schools put their best golfers on the two man team whereas RHS put their best golfers on the four man team which helped their standing in the results for the four man teams.

Frederick Metzer Passes Away

    Frederick Metzer, 60, Rossville, passed away April 15, 2015.
    Frederick is survived by wife, Debbie; step-son, David Lipe; siblings, Jim Metzer, Pat Colliver and Marilyn McWhorter.
    Memorial service in Topeka will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. Visitation in Coffeyville will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church, 406 Old Willow Street, Coffeyville KS 67337, with parish rosary prayed at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at the church with burial to follow in the Calvary section of Restlawn Cemetery. Golf Team Wins Tournament

    The Rossville boys golf team came in firs at the Osage City Invitational on April 16.  The team was lead by Paul Steinke who had a 78.  Cody Hadsall was sixth with an 87.  Gabe Marney was 14th with a 94 and Alex Bird was 23rd with a 99.

Baseball Team Beats Bears Twice (Updated)

    The RHS baseball team won two games against St. Marys.  The first was an 10-0 no-hit shutout which was followed by an 11-7 game.  The Dawgs are 6-0 after these two wins.

Game One
    The batting was led by a trio of Tucker Horak, Thatcher Horak and Dawson Hammes who each had two hits.  Christian Roduner only had one hit,  but it was a home run driving in 4 RBIs.   Tucker had two RBIs.
    Tucker Horak pitched all five innings allowing no hits,  no runs and one walk while getting 8 strike-outs.

Game Two

    The hitting was spread out somewhat with Tucker Horak, M. Matumoto, Jack Steckel, Corbin Horak and Christian Roduner each getting two hits.  One of Matumoto's hits was a home run and he drove in five RBIs.  Tucker Horak had a double and single and drove in four RBIs.  

    The pitching was spread among three Dawgs.  Freshman Jarred Morris pitched two innings allowing three hits and two runs..  Sophomore Jacob Bradshaw pitched two innings allowing four hits and five runs.  Senior Ethan Woodcock pitched three innings allowing  one hit and no runs.

Dawgs Shut Out Bears 13-0

    Amanda Hill pitched a five inning shutout while allowing only one hit in the night cap on April 16.     Amanda had nine strikes-outs while only throwing 6 first pitch strikes.
    Taylor Kirk, Amanda Hill and Heidi Nitsch each had three hits and Heidi also led the RBI column with four.

    The Lady Dawgs put on another fine performance against visiting St. Marys on April 16 by opening the double header with an 8-0 shutout.
    Taylor Kirk and Breanna Hill led the batters with three hits each.  Breanna led the team in RBIs with two.  Lauryn Steckel, Heidi Nitsch, and Breanna Hill each had three quality at bats.
    Taylor Kirk was the winning pitcher getting 7 strike-outs and 17 first pitch strikes in her seven innings on the mound.
