NW Bailey Rd Closed

NW Bailey Road will be closed temporarily on March 25 for the replacement of the bridge over Snake Creek.  The projected date for completion is June 28.

Ostrander & Silversmith Have a Boy

Tinley Ostrander and Braelund Silversmith of  Rossville are the proud parents of a new baby boy born March 22 2019 at Stormont-Vail in Topeka.

Edna (Kincaid) Prior Passes Away

Edna Mildred Kincaid Prior, 89, formerly of St. Marys, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at McCrite Health Center in Topeka.
She was born March 8, 1930 in Topeka the daughter of Colton F. and Alma M. Smalley Kincaid. She graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1947. After graduation Edna worked at Ray’s Printing in Topeka for 8 years. In 1967 she started working at Gockel’s IGA where she worked for 21 years. She co-owned and operated Prior-DeBacker Liquor Store in St. Marys for 7 years. Edna also worked as a sub for USD No. 321 in food services for several years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was united in marriage to John William Prior on November 7, 1953 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. They had 4 children, Dennis, Karen, Diane and Patricia. John preceded her in death on June 20, 2017. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, C.F. “Junior Kincaid and Donald Kincaid and a sister, Arlene Kincaid.
Survivors include her children, Dennis (Janice) Prior, Rossville, Karen Stockman (Marc Rupp), Arvada, CO., Diane (Severin) DeBacker, Topeka/Seattle and Patricia Rentfro, Topeka; 7 grandchildren, Dannielle, Andy, Matt, Bailey, Adam, Jeff and Zach; 7 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Max, Sebastian, Ava, Calyn, Hadley and Ida; nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank McCrite Health Center and Great Lakes Hospice for the care given to Edna and her family.
A graveside service will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 25, 2019 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Mrs. Prior will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Piper Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice and sent to Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street; St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

Taylor Kirk & WU Softball

Washburn U played two softball games on Friday, March 22 in a tournament at Emporia State.

St. Cloud State U. defeated Washburn in the first game 7-3 with the Washburn bats unable to string hits together to generate runs.   Both teams had 8 hits,  but the Ichabods weren't able to get them at the right time.  Taylor Kirk had four at-bats with no hits.

Washburn made up for the lack of hitting in game one to defeat Concordia-St. Paul 11-1 in their second game of the day.  Taylor Kirk had 3 hits, 2 runs, and 3 RBIs.  Her hits included a double, a triple and a home run to boost her already impressive slugging average.

Taylor Kirk & WU Softball

    Washburn picked up a win against Upper Iowa on March 21 to the tune of 7-5.  Taylor Kirk had 1 hit, 2 RBIs in 3 at-bats.  Her one hit was her seventh home run of the season.
    Wayne State defeated Washburn  5-0 in a game with little offense from WU on March 21.  Taylor Kirk had 2 at-bats without hits,  but did reach base twice on walks.  However the Ichabods only generated 4 hits and couldn't drive any runs home.
    At this point in the season, Taylor is second on the team with a .360 batting average and leads the team in slugging percentage at .730.

Zlatnik (08) Is KWCA Asst Coach Of Year

Duane Zlatnik has been selected by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Assn. as the 2019 6A Assistant Coach Of The Year.

Caila Hill, a  5-11  senior, was selected to the third team,  All-State 2A basketball team by the Capital-Journal.  She led the Lady Dawgs in scoring and rebounding this past year.

David Ronnebaum (79) Passes Away


Rossville—David L. Ronnebaum, 59, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 at his rural Rossville home.
He was born February 26, 1960 at Axtell, the son of Donald A. and Rose Marie Martin Ronnebaum. David grew up in the St. Marys and Delia communities and graduated from Rossville High School in 1979.
David worked for Custom Wood Products in St. Marys where he began his 35 year career on April 7, 1983. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, and Knights of Columbus Council NO. 657 in St. Marys. He coached his children in baseball, basketball and softball and loved to give his advice to them on their golf game. He enjoyed his grandchildren, KU, and golfing.
He was preceded in death by his mother Rosie on March 14, 2017.
On May 19, 1984 he was united in marriage to Beth A. Baumchen at Emmett. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his father, Donald A. Ronnebaum, St. Marys; his son, Derek (Brittany) Ronnebaum, Las Vegas, NV; his two daughters, Kristen (Bryant) Clark and Nicole (Lance) Burroughs, all of Ottawa; two brothers, Terry (Carol) Ronnebaum, Topeka and Mike (Janet) Ronnebaum, Axtell; three sisters, Jeanne (Nick) Disidore, Lenexa, Linda (Dan) Luthi, Wamego and Diane (Jim) Todd, Lenexa; three grandchildren, Tristan, Aiden and Zayne.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. David will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until the rosary at 7:00 P.M. Friday, March 22, 2019 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in David’s name to help offset funeral expenses and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, KS. 6653
