Outlook For Friday's Game

                                    ROSSVILLE (7-2) AT NEMAHA CENTRAL (7-2)  

The two small-school powers haven’t played in three years, but their last two meetings were big ones. Rossville knocked off 27-22 in the 2016 3A state semifinals and went on to capture its third straight Class 3A state championship. The two also met in the second round in 2015 with Tucker Horak’s monster game leading Rossville to a 61-20 win. There’s another Horak guiding Rossville this year with sophomore Torrey having rushed for 1,044 yards and 16 touchdowns and thrown for 939 yards and 16 scores. Woodrow Rezac has added 793 yards and nine scores on the ground and Bo Reeves had 500 yards receiving and eight TDs. Nemaha Central has won six straight since a 1-2 start with the losses coming to Sabetha (13-6) and Holton (28-14). Dylan Schultejans has thrown for 1,337 yards and 19 touchdowns with four receivers having at least 15 catches and 220 yards. Rossville’s only losses came to Silver Lake (14-13) and Riley County (34-15).

School Threat A Hoax

Posted on the school FB page on Nov. 5:
    Kaw Valley, Rossville Jr/Sr. High School, the Rossville Police department and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s office investigated a message that was found threatening the school on the bathroom wall. Through our investigation we able to determine the origin of the message and also determined it was a hoax. The suspect was identified in this process and we worked alongside law enforcement to take the proper steps necessary. We at Rossville Jr/Sr. High School are dedicated to student safety and that it is our number one priority. We want to thank our partners in law enforcement in bringing this situation to a close.

On 11/05/19 at approximately 9am an almost unintelligible written future threat was discovered on a bathroom wall at the Rossville Junior-Senior High. School administration immediately called the Rossville Police Department. Upon our initial review, it was determined no immediate threat existed at that time. A joint investigation was initiated involving the Rossville Police, USD # 321, and the Shawnee County Sheriff and revealed the threat was not credible. The suspect was identified through detailed video review and interviews to be a student. The threat was found to be a copy-cat hoax from an incident that occurred recently in another city. Appropriate disciplinary steps were taken administratively by the school as required by policy. The Rossville Police Department wishes to thank USD # 321 administration and staff as well as the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office for their cooperation and quick response to this unfortunate incident.

Sarah Medley Passes Away

   Sarah F. Medley, 92 years old, passed away on November 3rd, 2019.  She was born November 21, 1926.  She is survived by her son Earl E. Smith.  Inurnment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.  To leave online condolences go to www.piperfuneralhome.com.

Kathy Cummings Passes Away

St. Marys—Karen Kathleen “Kathy “ Cummings, 54, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019 from injuries she sustained in an auto accident.

 She was born July 10, 1965 in Topeka, the daughter of the late David J. “Joe” and Karen A. Miller Schoemann.  Kathy grew up in the St. Marys community and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1983. 

Kathy had been a CNA at the St. Marys Manor; she had worked at the B&B Café and Bernie’s, TRA and later at Andax Industries all in St. Marys.  She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys.

 On August 22, 1987 she was united in marriage to Robert L. “Bob” Cummings in St. Marys.  He survives of the home.

 Other survivors include her two sons, Ryan Cummings, Belvue and Shawn (Amira) Cummings, Manhattan; two brothers, David Schoemann, St. Marys and Scott (Daphne) Schoemann, Belvue; two grandchildren, Keaton and Brynlee Cummings, several nieces and nephews.

 Memorial Contributions may be made to the St. Marys Food Pantry and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.  

Larry Anderson (61) Passes Away

Larry B. Anderson, 77, of Rossville, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019.

He was born September 13, 1942, in Weaverville, North Carolina, the son of Edgar and Lucille Alma (Sawyer) Anderson.  He graduated from Rossville High in 1961 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Larry was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Topeka until opening  Anderson Upholstery which later became Anderson Booth and Equipment in Rossville, KS.

Larry married Joan M. (Dolezilek) (62) Anderson on August 14, 1967 in Miami, OK. She survives.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Anderson in 1987.

Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and restoring old cars.

Honoring his request, cremation is planned. Services will be held at a later date. Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel is assisting the family. Service information will be posted as soon as it becomes available. Please check back later for more information.

Stolen Rossville Vehicle Recovered

From the Capital-Journal:

Two Shawnee County residents were arrested Saturday afternoon in Holton after officers responded to a stolen vehicle report, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

The arrests were made as a result of a joint-investigation by the Holton Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Morse said.

Officers from both agencies were called around 3 p.m. Saturday to the O’Reilly Auto Parts at 204 US-75 highway in Holton regarding a possible stolen vehicle.

Officers determined that a 2004 Pontiac Vibe car had been reported stolen out of Rossville, Morse said.

Two individuals believed to be associated with the stolen vehicle were taken into custody Morse said. Both were booked into the Jackson County Jail.

The arrest individuals were identified as Theresa Michelle Fitzgibbons Miller, 34, of Auburn, who was booked into jail in connection with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia; and Brad A. Emmerson, 52, of Topeka, who was booked into jail in connection with felony possession of stolen property.

Girls CC Team Fourth At State

The Rossville Lady Dawgs Cross Country team competed in the 2A State Cross Country Meet at Wamego on Saturday, placing 4th as a team. Three teams qualify for the state meet from four Regional meets, for a total of 12 teams competing at State. The girls ran very well, on a beautiful day, finishing with fewer points (115) than their 2018 State 4th place finish (141 points), and much closer to being on the podium as a team. 3rd Place had 110 points, and 2nd place 106 points - this is a very close gap in cross country. This shows an incredible amount of consistency and hard work from these ladies to perform so well with the pressure of the state meet. Congratulations Dawgs!

Margery Blythe Passes Away

Dover—Margery E. Blythe, 86, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019 at the Alma Manor with family by her side.

She was born April 28, 1933 at Maple Hill a triplet of Thomas R. and Edith V. Moran Logan.  Margery graduated from Dover High School in 1951.  She attended Clark’s School of Business in Topeka. She had lived in the Dover community nearly all of her life.

Margery worked for Santa Fe Railroad in her younger years.  She worked for the Farmers Union COOP in St. Marys and was a farm wife.  Margery was a member of the Dover Federated Church.  She was very active in the Dover Heritage Days for many years.  She had served as a Dover 4H leader and also served on the Maple Hill Township board.  Margie was an avid sports fan.

On February 12, 1955 she was united in marriage to William “Gail” Blythe.  He preceded her in death on April 20, 2007.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Martin, Elden Dale, Marion, Charles Duane and Mary.

Survivors include her son, Rodney (Candy) Blythe, Dover; two daughters, Nancy (Kenn) Sommer, Alma and Betty (Darin) Schwant, Dover; her sister, Margaret Phillips, Topeka; 6 grandchildren, Kyle (Carlie) Sommer, Kelsey (Jay) Stamm, Erin (Nick) Melton, Emily Schwant, Kylie (Mike Bruening) Blythe and William Blythe; a great-grandchild, Brogan Stamm and one on the way.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Dover Federated Church.  Interment will be in the Dover Cemetery.  Mrs. Blythe will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Woman Killed On 24 At St. Marys

ST. MARYS, Kan. (KSNT) – Kansas Highway Patrol released the name of the woman who was killed in the accident on Highway 24 on Friday morning.

Kathleen Cummings, 54, of Belvue, died after her car was hit head-on by a car traveling westbound in an eastbound lane.

RHS Dominates Maur Hill (updated)

   The Dawgs breezed to an easy first round win in the 2A state football playoffs on the home field Nov. 1, 2019.  The Maur Hill Ravens were known to feature a high powered passing offense that the stout Dawg defense held in check the whole night.   The Dawgs  tackle Nemaha Central next Friday night in Seneca.  They defeated St. Marys 49-20.

Roger Lambotte Passes Away

Dover—Roger Dean Lambotte, 79, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019, at his son’s rural Dover home.

 He was born August 26, 1940, at Dover the son of George T. and Opal B. Croyle Lambotte.  Roger graduated from Dover High School in 1958, while in high school he enjoyed playing football and baseball.

 Roger was a Rancher.

 On May 17, 1,961 he was united in marriage to Janice Hays at Dover.  They later divorced.

 Roger was preceded in death by his parents.

 Survivors include his son, Clinton L. (Vickie) Lambotte, Dover; his daughter, Christina L. Lambotte, Topeka; three grandchildren, Tomas C. Lambotte, Dover, Lanette M. (Tyler) Hilti brand, Centralia and Wendy (Corey) Meyer, Morrill; five great-grandchildren.

 Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 4, 2019, at the Dover Federated Church.  Interment will be in the Dover Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. Marjorie Hersh Passes Away

Marjorie L. "Marge" Hersh Marjorie L. (Marge) Hersh 94 of Topeka, KS, passed away on October 25, 2019, at Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka, KS. She was born in Delia, KS, on November 25, 1924, the daughter of Clarence T and Anna L Reilly Gideon. While living in Topeka, Marge attended Boswell Junior High, Topeka High School, Washburn University. She worked as a draftsman for both Bell Telephone and Kansas Power and Light.

She is survived by her children: Lisa A Hersh, Portland, OR, John M Hersh, (Linda), Topeka, George M Hersh II, (Marcia), Olathe, Brian C Hersh, (Lonna) Topeka, Grandchildren Jessica Dercher, (Tom), Ashley Tomes, (Janson), Jamie Murray, (Andrew), Mark Hersh,(Jaclyn) Allison Offield, (Daniel), Melissa Hersh, Whitney Hersh, Katelyn Hersh, Emily Hersh, Shelby Hersh. Great Grandchildren Zachary and Brody Dercher, Weston, Grant and Baker Mae Tomes, Clara, and Quinn Murray. Seven Nieces and Seven Nephews.

At her request, services will be private. Celebration of Life gathering will be held at The Foundry Event Center 400 SW 33rd St Topeka, KS 66614 on November 10, 2019 from 4-6 pm for friends and family.
