Cheri Gamino Passes Away

      St. Marys—Cheri L. Gamino, 74, St. Marys, passed away Friday, May 28, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

     She was born November 23, 1946, in Braymer, MO. the daughter of Lee and Myrtle Beam Phillips.

Is given to the Rossville Junior High student who demonstrates school spirit and exemplifies leadership by promoting the excellence of others.

Teddy Schmid Memorial Award

Is presented annually to the student attending Rossville Jr. High who demonstrates the following qualities:

Moodys Have A Boy

Victoria and Cameron Moody of Rossville are the proud parents of a new baby boy, born May 23 at Stormont-Vail.

Steve Lewis Passes Away

 A Celebration of Life for Stephen William ‘Steve’ Lewis, 72, Lawrence, will be held on Monday, May 31st at Worden United Methodist Church, at a time to be announced soon.

He died May 21, 2021, at his home, surrounded by family.

Steve Lewis was a former English Professor at Rossville High during the 1970’s

Steve was a longtime employee of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant.

Potawatomi First Census Book

The Potawatomi census book of 1862 remains a vital foundational document for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation; however, the Tribe does not have possession of it. CPN staff first saw it in 2006 at St. Marys Indian Pay Station Museum in St. Marys, Kansas. The artifact documents the Nation’s beginning, and members and staff of CPN have spent almost 15 years attempting to gain custody from the city’s historical society.

The Treaty of 1861 presented Potawatomi in Kansas the option to either continue living on a communal reservation or accept a small allotment for their families and begin a path to United States citizenship. Those who took individual parcels later became known as Citizen Potawatomi. Part of the treaty also guaranteed a census of those living on the reservation accepting allotments, which the government carried out the following year.

Tracey Paine Passes Away

 TRACY PAINE OBITUARY

Tracy Paine passed peacefully at her apartment on May 18, 2021.

Tracy was the youngest of five children who spent their childhood years in Rossville, Kansas. Later in life she moved to Topeka where she spent the rest of her life.

Tracy was an avid junker who loved to find bargains at auctions and garage sales. She bought and sold many fantastic antiques in her years of collecting.

Tracy was also a collector of animals. She loved and cared for many pets through her life, beginning as a child.

Tracy is preceded in death by her parents Eddie and Darlene Paine as well as an older brother Terry Paine. Survivors are three brothers Ed Paine of Topeka, Jon Paine of Maple Hill and Mark Paine of Topeka.

No service will be held. The family will gather this summer to celebrate Tracy’s life.

Rossville High School held its annual Spring Awards Night on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 to bestow awards and scholarships to deserving students. The counselor, administration, and faculty would like to thank all of the scholarship contributors and presenters for their donations and interest in the students of Rossville. Your dedication to our students is greatly appreciated.

The following scholarships were presented:

Topeka Evening Sertoma Club Scholarship

Presented to Julia Streit. This scholarship was established to honor distinguished deceased members of the Topeka Evening Sertoma Club and the Topeka LaSertoma Club, Bennett Berggren, Vern Knobelauch, and Clint and Isabella Hutton.

Coach Lance Leonard Inspirational Scholarship: ($650)

Presented to Briar Gillum. This scholarship is to honor the volunteering with youth sports Mr. Leonard did over his lifetime. His tireless efforts to instruct the youth of his community was inspiring to many.

Custom Wood Products Scholarship: ($1000 renewable)

Presented to Destiny Bergstresser. The scholarship was established by Donald and Pamela Lake  to further Custom Wood’s commitment to the communities of Rossville and St. Marys.

Rossville Booster Club Scholarship: ($500)

Presented by Jenny Schaefer to Peyton Price and Breck McCrory. The award began in 2012 and the recipient must have participated in a KSHSAA activity throughout high school.

Bryan Lindstrom Inspirational Scholarship: ($1000)

Presented to Breck McCrory. This scholarship is a tribute to Bryan, who was an inspiration to others and lost his life to cancer in 2013.

Rossville High School Alumni Association: ($1500)

Presented by Connie Fisher to Alex Sherer, Katie Madison Horgan and Breck McCrory.  The  Association was founded in 1998 and has awarded over $33,000 to deserving students in this 22-year period. The award’s recipient must meet high standards set out by the association and be a good representative of RHS as they move on through college and begin their career.

Rossville United Methodist Church: ($2000 renewable scholarship)

Presented by Tricia Conley to Casey Conely.  The award is given to seniors that are members of the church.

Bank of the Flint Hills Employee Donor Advised Scholarship: ($500)

Presented to Peyton Price. This fund combines the generous gifts of bank employees to provide scholarships to area seniors.

Doug Perine Memorial Scholarship: ($500)

Presented to Gracie Rabe. The scholarship was established in 2012 to honor Doug, a longtime community figure, and is given to an RHS student planning to continue their education.

Les & Dorothy Hallmark Memorial Scholarship: ($500)

Presented to Dylan Reitcheck. The scholarship was established by Dorothy Hallmark in memory of her husband Les who was an Art teacher at Rossville High School for many years.    Dorothy was a media specialist for many years at RHS and, following her passing last year, their  son Alan has continued the scholarship to honor both of his parents. The recipient must have an interest in Art.

Cole Arnold Memorial Scholarship: ($500)

Presented by Toby and Ann McCullough to Dylan Reitcheck.  The award is presented annually in memory of their son Cole who died in a car accident the summer before his Senior year.

Rossville Community Development Committee (RCDC) Scholarship: ($500)

Presented by Taylor Morelli to Parker Kenney and Peyton Price. The scholarship is based on achievements, community involvement, and contributions to the community of Rossville.

P.E.O. Scholarship: ($500)

Presented by Lynette Hudson to Breck McCrory and Madison Horgan . This scholarship is awarded annually to young ladies from each of the area high schools.

Pete Darting Memorial Scholarship: ($150)

Presented by Dennis Darting to Parker Kenney. The award was established in 2008 by the Darting family to honor Mr. Darting, an avid supporter of the Rossville Dawgs.

RHS Opportunity Scholarship:

This is the 7th year for the award, which is provided by an anonymous donor. Recipients are chosen based on GPA, ACT, resume, strength of schedule, and an essay over an experience that made an impact in their life. Students must plan to pursue a career in Engineering, Science, Medicine, Math, or a related field. $500 scholarships were awarded to Destiny Bergstresser,  Gracie Rabe and Julia Streit

Duane Parr Memorial Scholarship: ($500)

Presented to Kendall Abernathy. This award is made possible by donations from family and friends as an endowment to honor Mr. Parr, who passed away in January of 2006. The recipient must have participated in a high school band.

The Ellis Foundation: ($2000 per year)

Presented to Dylan Reitcheck, Parker Kenney, Destiny Bergstresser and Tatum Gentry. The Ellis Foundation was established by Danny and Willa Ellis in memory of their daughter Kathy Lynn Ellis Adriance.

Stormont Vail Volunteer Scholarship

Presented to Austin Klesath. The Stormont Vail Health Auxiliary Student Volunteer Scholarship was designed to financially assist students interested in a health related career.  Priority will be given to students attending a Kansas school. This scholarship is awarded to four recipients in the amount of $1,000 each.

Rossville Community Foundation

Presented by Ann McCullough to Alex Sherer. This scholarship is based on achievements,  community involvement, and contributions to the community of Rossville.

Bill Simmons Memorial Scholarship

Presented to Gracie Rabe. The M.H. “Bill” Simmons Memorial Scholarship was established by Mark Simmons in 1979 in the name of his late father and founder of the Simmons organization.  The program was created to assist in the educational endeavors of the children of Simmons team members and growers, specifically graduating seniors who are pursuing a vocational, technical or college degree program.

Bowens Have A Boy

Baseball Team Loses in Regional Semi-Final

     The Rossville High baseball team lost their regional semi-final game to No. 1 seeded Seneca-Nemaha Central  by a score of 8-2. 

Gay Crawford Passes Away

    Topeka—Gay V. Crawford, 64, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2021 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.

     Gay was born November 3, 1956 at Santa Fe, NM., the daughter of Vance R. and Betty M. Trenton Crawford.  Gay graduated from Rossville High School and Kansas State University where she earned her B.S. of Business Administration-Accounting and a B.S. in Political Science-Public Administration.

     Gay was a Certified Internal Auditor, she had worked as a senior Lease Auditor at Collective Brands.  She had been the Director of Finance at the Topeka YMCA.  While working for Westar Energy, she held several different positions including being an Accounting Supervisor, an Accounting Analyst, Fuel Accountant, Budget Analyst, an Internal Auditor, and a Financial Communications Specialist.  Gay was a member of the Rossville Christian Church, ABWA, YWCA of Topeka where she held several offices and served on several boards.  She also was a past member of public relation/fundraising for Helping Hands Humane Society, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Friends of the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library, ERC Designer Showhouse, Whisper Walk, ACS Topeka Relay for Life.

     Gay was preceded in death by her parents, and a niece, Kylie.

     Survivors include her brother, Rudy (Debra) Crawford, Topeka; nephew, Caleb Crawford: boyfriend, Bob Jensen, Topeka; her fur babies, Lola and Gypsy; several cousins and many steadfast friends.

  Celebration of Life Services will be at 3:30 P.M. Saturday, May 22, 2021, at the Rossville Christian Church.  Inurnment will be in the Rossville Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the church.

     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, Topeka Rescue Mission, Topeka YMCA, Rossville Christian Church or the Charity of your choice and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

Softball Team Is Regional Runner-Up

 The Rossville softball team lost to Rock Creek 4-2  on May 18 in the championship game for the region.
