RHS senior Hailey Horton is nominated for Capital-Journal Area Athlete Of The Week
The senior continued her stellar season at Rossville’s home meet on Saturday. Horton won the individual title in the girl's 155-pound weight division. She dispatched all of her opponents via pin as she improved her season record to 16-3. The Highland Community College softball signee helped Rossville take fourth place as a team.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A suspicious vehicle in Central Topeka led to the discovery of fentanyl pills among other drugs and the driver’s New Year’s Eve arrest.
The Shawnee Co. Sheriff’s Office says that just before 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, law enforcement officials were called to the 1100 block of SW Gage Blvd. with reports of a suspicious vehicle.
During the investigation, law enforcement officials said the driver, identified as Richard L. Leonard, 43, of Rossville, was found to have multiple outstanding warrants. Illegal drugs, including Dirty 30 pills and methamphetamine, were allegedly found on Leonard and inside the vehicle.
As a result, Leonard was arrested and booked into the Shawnee Co. Dept. of Corrections on:
As of Tuesday, Leonard remains behind bars on a $10,000 bond for the narcotics counts, $2,500 for his felony Shawnee Co. warrant, and $6,750 for his Topeka bench warrant.
Henry Raymond "Hank" DeVader 96, passed away Monday, January 1, 2024 at his home.
Hank was born May 30, 1927, at Emmett, the son of Edward J. and Marie Natalie DeWilde DeVader. Hank was raised on a farm near Emmett and lived all of his life in the Emmett and St. Marys communities.
Hank owned and operated DeVader Floor Covering in St. Marys for many years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 657 and a 4th degree member of Thomas A. McNieve Assembly #289 both in St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven DeVader; brothers, Edward Jr., Raphael (Ray), Joe, and Leonard; sisters, Anna Morford, Helen Helget, Mary Kay Berberick and Theresa DeVader; his son-in-law, Larry Cornwell.
Henry and Elaine Mulligan were married October 13, 1956 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett. She survives at their home. Other survivors include a son Michael (Peggy ) DeVader, St. Marys; two daughters, Kathy Cornwell, Newton, and Jeannette DeVader, KC, MO.; a daughter-in- law, Jeanne DeVader, St.Marys; seven grandchildren, Emily Kohl, Beth Purdom, Daniel DeVader, Jonathan DeVader, Sarah DeVader, Jennifer Mitchell, and Craig Sanger; 10 great-grandchildren, Makenna, Addison and Taylor Kohl, Quinton and Ezra Purdom, Ella, Haley and Paige Mitchell, Abigail and Liam Sanger.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys, Hank will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:00 until the 7:00 P.M. Rita taught school in Holton, Havensville, Onaga, Royal Valley, and USD 321. She worked after retirement for the legislature in Topeka. She also worked tirelessly at the museum in St. Marys.
Community was important to Rita. She was always busy with her many clubs and community activities; she was a member St. Marys Chamber of Commerce, Kaw Valley Education Association serving as president, lifetime member of NEA and KNEA, Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Zeta Chapter, served as president, life member of the Kansas State Alumni Association, Kansas State Presidents Club, Adheren Club, St. Marys Women’s Golf Association serving as president, St. Marys Golf Course Commission, Literary Club, Rossville Library Book Club, Bunco group, American Legion Auxiliary president, IC women's Circle and was in charge of funeral dinners at one time. She was director and president of the St. Marys Historical Society for over 30 years. She took pride in the fine museum she helped develop.
Rita ran in half marathons; she joked that she won the over 50 races, played tennis at Woodvalley in Topeka, golfed, and Biked Across Kansas. She loved to hike and swim also. She hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon at age 59. She was proud of the fact that she initiated the family pass at the St. Marys pool. She walked and worked out each day. Rita had season tickets to Kansas State volleyball, football, and girls’ basketball.
Rita loved to watch her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their activities. She traveled many miles to watch ball games, track meets, cross-country and any other activity they participated in.
Rita was a world traveler. She loved cruises, bus trips, overseas trips with Dr. Kurtz from K-State and many other trips around the world, road trips with friends and family, and traveling to football and girls’ basketball games to cheer on Kansas State. She could also be seen gambling from time to time. Rita took pride in her yard and loved working outdoors with her flowers. Rita loved life and lived each moment on her terms.
Rita is preceded in death by her parents, siblings; Dale and Joe Straub, Theola Bearman, Pauline Ellis, and Maxine Eichem. She is survived by her children; Charles Simecka (Debbie), Topeka, Alan Simecka (Donna), and Lori Martini (Steve), Manhattan; 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 P.M. Friday, January 5, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery St. Marys. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 5:00 until the 7:00 P.M. Rosary.
