Arica Ahlvers--Emporia Gazette Article

When several former ESU volleyball players, on social media, gave the waves that something was horrifically amiss on Thursday, I got uneasy. I couldn’t locate much information for several hours, but I could tell whatever the situation, it was unusually dire.

Now, I was a student at Emporia State from 2006-10. Though I wasn’t immediately attentive toward its athletic programs, there were two I took a quick liking to: volleyball and baseball. As bad as I probably was, I had played both, understood them and ESU had outstanding teams to follow in both cases.

I went to numerous games, including some on the road. Over the years I had gotten to know players, parents, grandparents and other relatives in some cases ... I was part of the family.

So when I got a message from a former volleyball parent around 9:30 on Thursday night, there was no longer uncertainty.

“Did you hear about Arica Shepard?”

My heart, which was already on edge to brace for whatever tragic news would come, sank and shattered almost instantaneously.

Arica (Shepard) Ahlvers was a three-time All-American, four-time All-MIAA player and currently is the only representative of Hornet volleyball whose name resides on a banner in the rafters at White Auditorium.

But I also considered her my friend.

And she is gone.

It had been awhile since we visited. We caught up briefly after the ESU volleyball alumni game in 2015 and on a visit to Allen Fieldhouse for a Hornet men’s exhibition game, I got a message to look up and shared a distant wave, as I was courtside and she, with her family, was almost at the very top.

During her time as the ESU Athletics Marketing Director, there were several visits to her office that revolved around Hornet volleyball, past and present. We discussed coaching philosophies, player roles and skill-sets and a number of other things under the athletics umbrella. She was still learning several of her duties, but often approached her projects with the same fire that helped lead her as a player. From her sophomore season through her senior year, the Hornets were 90-19, ESU’s best three-year stretch in NCAA play. She played in 493 games, tying for the second-highest total ever at Emporia State. Statistically, she is at or near the top of career and single-season marks in most offensive categories including kills, kills per set and digs.

She suffered a blood clot in her brain, a similar fate to Blue Valley football coach Eric Driskell, who experienced a ruptured brain aneurysm Sunday. She was at home, he was speaking to a room full of colleagues, but ultimately the end result was the same.

The memorial service is Friday morning in Topeka, a time I expect will not only be to celebrate her life, but remember her parents, husband and almost 2-year-old daughter and support them with the love she once provided those around her.

Sports often create a distraction from ‘real life,’ from politics, world news, relationships, religion, the whole lot. But entwined in the action, the competition, are people whose lives — more than their performances — can reel things back in and put it all into perspective.

The typical gambit of emotions that surround the mourning process has certainly proven to be a reminder of the mortality we all face. Enjoy the sporting community and the success stories it provides, but also celebrate the people and what they bring to your life outside the field of competition.

RHS Girls Get One Point Win Over Riley

    The RHS girls got an important win in their quest for a MEL title.  They got a one point win on the home court that was not decided until the final buzzer.  Rossville had the lead 45-44 but Riley Co got a rebound off a missed Rossville free throw and had about 11 seconds for a final shot.  However,  the Rossville girls played excellent defense and the Riley girls never got a shot off.
    RHS moves into sole possession of 2nd place over Riley with a 7-2 record.  Wabaunsee leads the MEL at 7-1,  so the Rossville girls need some help.

MEL Music Festival

    Thirty six  Rossville students attended the Mid East League Music Festival on Wed., Feb. 15.  They performed  22 different solos, ensembles, or large groups. Rossville ended the day with 13 "Superior" "1" ratings, and the rest "2's," which are "Excellent." 
    The RHS musicians now begin  preparations  for the Regional Festival on April 1st at Benedictine College. 

Rossville Police Chase Parole Violator

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - 

A high-speed chase ran through three counties before ending with a crash in Manhattan.

Rossville police say the man in his late twenties is a parole absconder from Missouri, the man's name was not released.

Authorities say the chase started this Tuesday afternoon with Rossville Police pursuing the suspect along Highway 24.

The suspect's vehicle reportedly reached speeds topping 120 miles per hour as it continued through Pottawatomie County and into Riley County.

Rossville police say the chase ended on Fort Riley Boulevard when the suspect hit another vehicle head-on.

Riley Co. Police tells 13 NEWS the suspect and a person in the vehicle that was hit, were hurt.

Phyllis Graves Passes Away

Phyllis M. Graves Phyllis M. Graves, 84, formerly of Rossville, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Rolling Hills Care Home in Topeka. Memorial services are pending at Piper Funeral Home St. Marys, Kansas.

RHS Girls Get Big Win

    Thew RHS girls knocked off league leading Wabaunsee on the opponents home court on Tuesday night.  The Chargers have recently been ranked #3 in 2A with a 15-1 (7-0 in MEL).
With the win,  the bulldawgs are 15.2 overall,  the same as the Chargers, and only one game behind in the MEL at 6-2.

EMPORIA, Kan. – Emporia State Athletics mourns the passing of three-time All-American volleyball player and former Athletic Marketing Director Arica Shepherd Ahlvers who passed away on February 9.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cole, Collins and the rest of Arica’s family. It’s a tragedy to lose someone so young,” said Emporia State Athletic Director Kent Weiser. “Arica was an outstanding student-athlete and her positive personality was evident on the volleyball court and again when she worked with us as our marketing director.”

Alvers was a four-time All-MIAA performer for the Hornet volleyball team from 2006-09 and a three-time first-team selection. She was a three-time AVCA All-American and holds ESU single season and career records in kills, kills per set, double figure kills matches and 20+ kill matches. She led the Hornets to the MIAA Championship and the NCAA Regional Championship match in 2009.

After graduation she spent a year as a marketing and sales consultant for Country Legends 106.9 before returning to Emporia State as the Director of Athletic Marketing in 2011. Her primary duties at ESU revolved around generating sponsorships and advertising revenue for the athletic department as well as marketing and promotional efforts for the Hornets. She oversaw Emporia State’s game day atmosphere and assisted with all phases of event management and operations. After two and a half years in that position she left to take a position as an account manager for hibu in January of 2014.

A native of Rossville, Kan., Ahlvers graduated from Emporia State in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She married Cole Ahlvers, a former football player at Benedictine College, in August of 2011. They are the parents of a daughter Collins.

There will be a Memorial Service for Arica at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Church, 25th and Wanamaker. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Collins Ray Ahlvers Fund at any Capital City Bank in Topeka or Lawrence. Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
