The window display at Dr. Kratina’s building on Main Street was very well received by the community. Tracy Taylor reported that she heard many positive comments at City Hall. Lisa Thornburg plans to change the display for Valentines Day and see what comes next. Next year for Christmas, it would be great to expand the tree displays in other windows on Main Street.

Shelly Buhler and Lisa made the flower pots on Main Street look festive for the winter season. Discussed ideas to improve the display next year.

The Veteran’s Day celebration with the American Legion was well received. Tracey made a delicious cake for the reception.  The veterans liked the engraved bricks and many were surprised by the bricks that were bought for them. City Hall has received several more orders since November. The bricks were picked up and will be installed during Spring Break. Thank you to  Alan McKenzie, Nicholas McKenzie, Lisa T, Shelly, Ann Foster and Christi for laying down the bricks. People can still continue to to order bricks. The form is online.

Andrick Park is a great addition to Main Street. A big thank you to the City Utility Department, Alan Zlatnik and Brad Kirk for the Christmas light and decorations. Christi reports that the City Council is working to get wifi at the Gazebo, hopefully by early summer. The PIP grant for the landscaping in Andrick Park is completed. The volunteers completed the project in one evening. The City has done a great job watering during the summer to keep all of the plants alive and growing. The last part of the plan from Laci Foster is to add peonies. Christi will contact Brenda Brown to see if the Andrick family wants to donate some peonies from their yards this spring. Peonies could be ordered in fall to bloom next year.

Lisa Stum has been working with the California Oregon Trail Association and National Parks Service for a sign that tells Rossville’s story on the trail. An anonymous donation had been made to help fund the sign. (Update: At the February Council Meeting Lisa received information from the NPS to begin designing the sign and the Council approved to move forward with the project)

Lisa Thornburg presented an idea for a PRIDE project grant. The border between Andrick Park and the neighboring houses looks unfinished. After doing some research, she presented the idea of a series of privacy screens that would coordinate with the Gazebo. Japanese Lilac trees could be planted between each screen. Barn Quilts could be hung on each screen. Local artist could paint the quilts to be displayed on the fence or at their homes. Lisa will look for an artist who could give classes and helpful hints. The barn quilts would be added to the Flint Hills Barn Quilt trail. The quilts could tie in historically with the Oregon Trail. Christi will apply for a PRIDE grant for the projects and ask for approval from the City Council. (Update the City Council gave approval for the fence, if funded)

The Kindness Project was presented by Lisa. Small stones are painted with designs or words and then left on public property for someone to find. The stones would say Rossville Rocks and Kansas Rocks with hashtags. TASMAD students will help to paint rocks.  People will be invited to participate in the kindness project utilizing the PRIDE facebook page. We hope to have the project ready for the Regional Conference. It will be fun to see where the rocks go.

Rossvile PRIDE has been asked to host the Kansas PRIDE regional conference on April 24. The conference is in the evening and feature talks about small community improvements and involvement and ideas about fundraising. Kansas PRIDE will give an update on programs and the partnership with the Kansas Masonic Lodge. Other locations hosting are Haysville, Kinsley, Iola and Grainfield.

            
It was decided to contact Todd Brown to use his building at 419 Main Street. (Update he said sure and welcomed the use of the building) April 23 is National Picnic Day, so we are going to celebrate a day later. We will serve a fried chicken meal with possible sides of baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, jello salad, and of course homemade pie. Kansas PRIDE will make a flier and collect registrations. We are hoping for 30 to 40 people to attend in Rossville.

The Rossville Community Foundation Celebration dinner is Sat.  April 7. Lisa will again design and decorate a table for the dinner. She will also create a display highlighting the projects that the Foundation and PRIDE have partnered, including Andrick Park, Pancake Breakfast, POP Art auction and Main Street.

Jerry Schwilling is curious about creating a dog park. There are a few location that may work. We will continue to research the idea.

The next meeting has not been scheduled yet.

Jacob Droge Is Student Of Week

Student of the Week: Jacob Droge- Jacob noticed trash throughout the park by the school and took it upon himself to pick up areas of the park. This is an awesome representation of the Rossville student body!

The Silver Lake boys team defeated Rossville 63-44 in the first round of the Regional Basketball tournament held at Silver Lake on Feb. 26.

Taylor Kirk Hits Home Run In WU Win

    Taylor Kirk hit a home run which netted 3 RBIs as Washburn U. defeated Wayne State 9-1 at Hays, KS on Feb. 23.  Taylor had 3 at bats with one hit, one run and 3 RBIs for the game.

Doris (Snoddy) (51) Widerburg Passes Away

    Doris Widerburg, 84, of Lawrence, KS, formerly of Overbrook, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018 at her home. She was born September 28, 1933 in Valencia, KS, the daughter of Virgil H. and Agnes (Banaka) Snoddy.
    Doris graduated Rossville High School. She had lived in the Overbrook community for 25 years. She had also previously lived in Lawrence for 9 years, Topeka for 14 years and Los Angeles, CA for 5 years. Doris was a homemaker.
    Survivors include her 2 daughters, Elizabeth G. Stewart (Alan) of Lenexa, KS and Jennifer L. Unekis (David) of Lawrence; her son, Lewis Tyrone “Ty” Rinehart (Nancy) of Baldwin City, KS; 5 grandchildren, Rory Moran, Joshua Moran and Adeline Grace Unekis, Aubrey and Rhett Rinehart and great­ grandson, Corwin Moran.
    Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with burial to follow in the Netawaka Cemetery. Raymond Adams III Passes Away

Raymond E. Adams III, of Maple Hill, Kansas was born January 30, 1952 in Manhattan, Kansas the son of Raymond E. Adams Jr. and Anne

Eddie was the heir to the Adams Cattle Company-Maple Hill, which is now R.E. Adams III LLC. At the time of his passing,  Eddie and his son were continuing the legacy but taking the company in a new direction with farming and fall-calving cows.

Eddie attended high school at Pembroke-Country Day School in Kansas City, Missouri where he graduated in 1970.  He graduated in 1974 from Kansas State University in Manhattan, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.  He met his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Farley, while both were attending K-State.  They were married May 27, 1972, at the Leawood United Presbyterian Church.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Peggy, his daughter, Jessica Anne Denton (Janne); his son, Raymond E. Adams IV  "Pete" and his wife, LeAnn; granddaughters, Lauren Newell, and Meredith, Sarah and Amelia Denton, and step-granddaughters, Hadley and Autymn Schreiner.

He is also survived by his mother, Anne; two sister, Sally Bitar and Marie Dolembo (Tom); three brothers, John (Lisa), Clay and Charlie Adams; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as friends.

Graveside services and interment will be at 11:30 A.M. Isaiah Luellen Wins State At 160#

HAYS — When Isaiah Luellen captured the 160-pound Class 3-2-1A state title last year as a junior, it was a pretty emotional moment for the Rossville standout.

For starters, he had come close as a sophomore, finishing runner-up at 152 pounds after a one-point loss in the finals. Furthermore, the title as a junior allowed Luellen to join his older brother, Isaac, as a state champion for the Bulldawgs, whom he admitted after the title he’d “looked up to his whole life.”

But the emotions that came with last year’s state title were nothing compared to the ones he experienced Saturday in Hays as he successfully defended his 160-pound state title.

After pulling out a 12-10 overtime win over Scott City’s Jarret Jurgens in Friday’s semifinals, Luellen dominated in the championship match for the second straight year with a 12-4 major decision victory over Plainville’s Jordan Finnesy.

Afterward, Luellen couldn’t fight off the emotions or tears.

“This one is so much more satisfying, so much more,” said Luellen, who capped a 23-0 senior season with the dominating effort.

The emotions behind Luellen’s victory were two-fold.

A series of offseason knee surgeries left not only Luellen’s senior season in question, but his future in the sport completely in doubt. In fact, doctors told him he might not wrestle again.

But Luellen fought back to return to the form that made him a champion and four-time state placer. And any time things got rough in the work it took to get there, Luellen had no trouble finding a source of inspiration.

For most of his wrestling career, Luellen could lean on former Bulldawg standout Cody Lambotte as a coach, mentor and friend. Lambotte was diagnosed with ALS last year, forcing him to give up his coaching duties and relegating Lambotte to a wheelchair for the weekend in Hays.

That’s motivation.

“With Coach Lambotte dealing with ALS, it makes this that much better because I get to do it for him,” Luellen said. “I just give the win to him. ... What I’ve gone through is nothing compared to what he’s going through. To see him over there in the practice room, at the meets — it’s just all for him.”

Luellen admitted he was a bit nervous going into the title match, despite taking out No. 2 Jurgens in the semifinals. But it didn’t take long to feel at ease.

“After that first takedown, I knew I had it,” he said. “I just felt it.”

Luellen built a 4-1 first-period lead with a pair of takedowns and just kept adding to it. Finnesy’s only points came on escapes and Luellen finished with six takedowns.

He finishes his career with a 130-18 record, two state titles, a runner-up finish and a fourth.

Kyle Parr At MSSU

Kyle Parr, son of Howard and Rhonda Parr, is a sophomore at Missouri Southern State University where he is a heptathlete during the indoor season (7 events) and a decathlete in the outdoor season (10 events). He beat his best in long jump, hurdles and won the 1000 in a meet this weekend.

Arrest Made In Rossville

Report from Rossville Police Dept.

February 23rd, 2018 near US 24 & Pearl in Rossville at approximately 7pm: The on-duty Rossville Officer witnessed an SUV towing a pickup on a car trailer drive westbound from the Casey’s Convenience Store parking lot with an illegal white tail light (instead of red). The SUV was stopped just west of the Cross Creek bridge. The tag and registration were found to be both expired and from a totally different vehicle. The illegal 2018 registration decal was defaced to conceal that it was from a third separate vehicle. A Silver Lake Police Officer was requested to respond for backup. Further investigation revealed the tag on the trailer was not valid and it was from a different trailer as well. The vehicle being towed on the trailer for sale that night in Junction City was not in the suspect’s name and was registered to another person although the suspect believed he could sell it as abandoned. The suspect had no proof of insurance, no proof of ownership of either of the vehicles or the trailer, no valid tags or registrations, and an extensive criminal history. The suspect faces multiple misdemeanor registration and traffic charges in Rossville Municipal Court. The tags were seized as evidence and the vehicles and trailer towed away by a wrecker service pending release with valid proof of ownership. The suspect was not from the local area and neither the vehicles nor the trailer were reported as stolen at the time of the incident.

Doris (Snoddy) (51) Widerburg Passes Away

Doris was born on September 28, 1933 and passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018.

Doris was a resident of Lawrence, Kansas at the time of passing.

Doris graduated Rossville High School.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with burial to follow in the Netawaka Cemetery.
