Leo Berry Passes Away


 Leo D. Berry, 83, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
He was born November 2, 1929 at Topeka, the son of Leo Daniel and Mildred Rupin Berry.  Leo grew up in the Rossville community and graduated from St. Marys High School, in 1947.  He attended Creighton University and Kansas State University and served in the United States Coast Guard.
Mr. Berry owned and operated the Berry Grain and Seed Company, Berry Fertilizer and Berry Irrigation companies for many years before selling them on July 28, 1976 and retiring.  He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Lee Berry.
Leo was united in marriage to Darlene Thompson in 1954 in Greensburg.  She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Michael (Cindy) Berry, Meriden, and Vincent (Stacy) Berry, Topeka; a daughter, Rhonda (Gary) Busse, Raymore, MO; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.  Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery.  Mr. Berry will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 10, 2013 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until the rosary at 7:00 P.M.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church or Catholic Charities of North East Kansas and sent in care of the Piper Funeral Home..

Darlene Berry Passes Away.

Darlene was born on January 23, 1927 and passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2019.
Darlene was a resident of Rossville, Kansas at the time of passing.
She graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Interment will follow in Rossville Cemetery. Darlene's family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. following the visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

Ruth (Diehl) (35) Martinek Passes Away



Ruth Agnes Diehl Martinek, 101, Topeka, died July 13, 2018 at Midland Hospice.
She was born February 19, 1917 in Stockton, Kansas, daughter of Myrtle and Frank Diehl and graduated from Rossville High School in 1935. She spent most of her life in the Rossville and Delia communities as well as Wimberely and Canton, Texas.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia.
She married Bennie Joseph Martinek on August 24, 1937 in Delia, Kansas. He died March 4, 1995. Two sons preceded her in death, Bennie (Sonny) V. Martinek and Dwight J. Martinek. Siblings preceding her in death were George and Earl Diehl, Alice Gentry, Ralph Nitzche and Ina Marney.
Survivors include son, Douglas F. Martinek (Pat), Topeka, grand-children Michelle (Mike) Berry, Doug (Amy) Martinek, Melissa (John) Kuckelman, Darren (Denise) Martinek and Mandi Martinek and Dustin (Robin) Martinek and great-grandchildren Jacob and Joseph Berry, Caroline and Ben Martinek, Jack and Mary Margaret Kuckelman, Christian, Courtlyn, and Cameron Martinek and Madison and Davis Martinek.
Visitation will be Wednesday July 18, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 9:00 am with a Rosary following at 9:30 am. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Mary’s. Hal Dale Taliaferro Passes Away

 Hal Dale Taliaferro, 74, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at his home. Hal was born May 27, 1948 at Atchison, the son of William Richard and Alice Marie Cooper Taliaferro. He was a 1965 graduate of Atchison County Community High School in Effingham. He was a proud graduate of Fort Hays State University, earning his bachelors degree in education and was forever a Jayhawk, earning his master's degree from the University of Kansas. Hal was a teacher, educator and coach, at Rossville High School before retiring.

A good coach can change a game. A great coach can change a life. Hal Dale Taliaferro , "Coach T", will forever be remembered in our hearts for his impact in our lives as a husband, father, brother, grandpa, teacher, coach and friend.

Hal married Carol Elizabeth Bausch on June 27, 2020 in Oskaloosa, she survives at home. He is also survived by a daughter, Pamela (Kevin) Lewis, Shawnee, seven sons, Matt (Sara) Taliaferro, Kansas City, KS, Aaron (Abby Frecks) Eigenman, Brendyn Eigenman, both of Topeka, Peyton Taliaferro, Oskaloosa, David (Bailey Meggison) Ortega and Brian Ortega, both of Topeka, Cooper (Hailey Hayford) Taliaferro, Lawrence, three sisters, Joan (Charles) Berry, San Diego, CA, Connie (Kenneth) Berry, Chandler, AZ, Jan (Robert) Anstaett, Aurora, CO, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Richard Taliaferro.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023 in Oskaloosa to honor and remember a man that will live in our hearts forever. Shirley Hudson (53) Passes Away

    Shirley Hudson, 77, of Rossville, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2013 at Midland Hospice in Topeka.
    She was born December 16, 1935 in Topeka the daughter of Wesley R. and Loma (Landis) Hudson. She graduated from Rossville High School and Emporia State Teachers College. She worked for over 52 years as office manager for Groff & Berry CPA. She loved sports, especially K-State football. Shirley loved to travel, going to 48 states in her lifetime.  Shirley was a 50 year member of the Rossville United Methodist Church.
    Survivors include her sister, Virginia Hays of Topeka; sisters-in-law, Mary Hudson of Topeka and Linda Hudson of Burlington, Kansas; dear life-long friend, Helen Viergever of Rossville; and numerous nieces and nephews of several generations. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Duane and Larry; her parents; one nephew, Douglas and a niece Kristie.
     Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday Nov 1, 2013 at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Rossville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11 Friday morning prior to the service at the church in Rossville. She will lie in state from 8-5 on Thursday at the Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Everett Hoobler Passes Away

”Everett A. "Ol Ev" Hoobler, 89, passed away late Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Oakley Place of Rossville.
He was born January 4, 1929 in the Turkey Creek Community, Wabaunsee County Kansas, the son of Vernon P. and Mary M. Rake Hoobler. He attended Turkey Creek and St. Marys grade schools and St. Marys High School until moving to Rossville where he graduated. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He lived in the Rossville community where he worked for Leo Berry Irrigation and Grain Systems. In 1961, Everett and his family moved to St. Marys when he was asked to take over the John Deere Dealership and hardware store. He brought the irrigation business to St. Marys. He and his son owned and operated Hoobler Drilling for 30 years. Everett was an Auctioneer and owned Hoobler Auction Service; he also was a real-estate agent. His greatest love was auctioneering.
Everett was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus at Flush. He was a founding member and helped raise money for the Rock Springs 4-H Ranch. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Shrine and OES. Everett was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville and Aubert-Wall VFW in St. Marys. He enjoyed golfing, and was instrumental in starting the St. Marys golf course. He had been a member of the Manhattan Country Club and was a Cat Backer.
He was united in marriage to Erma L. Wolfe on February 9, 1951 at Topeka. She preceded him in death on September 25, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Lloyd, Ray, Albert and Dwight Hoobler; his sister, Mildred Ronsee.
Survivors include two brothers, Forest Hoobler, Topeka and Lester Hoobler, Seattle, WA; his children, Dan (Angie) Hoobler, Wamego and Jayne (Doug) Wolf, Hope; granddaughters, Sara (Dale) Nordlund, Valley Falls, Olivia Wolf, Wichita, Valery Wolf, York County, Maine and Elizabeth (Chris) Giestina, Loveland CO.; twin great-granddaughters.
Military Graveside Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery with interment to follow. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Douglas Martinek (59) Passes Away


Douglas F. "Doug" Martinek, 81, of Union City passed away 2:12 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Ray & Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Paducah, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Father Richard Coy will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

Visitation will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday. The rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m. Sunday.

Edmaiston Mosley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Douglas F. Martinek was born July 21, 1941, in Delia, Kansas, son of the late Benedict "Bennie" Martinek and Ruth (Diehl) Martinek. He was a 1959 graduate of Rossville High School in Rossville, Kansas. Doug further pursued his higher education by attending the University of Kansas where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He also played and lettered in football while at KU. On December 1, 1962 he married his high school sweetheart, Patrica A. (Parr) Martinek. After college in June 1964, Doug started working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Topeka, Kansas. He was also employed at the Jackson, Michigan and Union City plants. Doug was honored by being the prestigious winner of the local and division "Goodyear Spirit Award" in 1977.  On June 6, 1993, Doug transferred back to the Goodyear plant in Topeka where he retired on August 8, 1995 after 31 years of service.

In August 2001, Doug began working as a Knights of Columbus field agent and finalized his working days by retiring after 10 years service selling insurance. Doug is a member and past president of the Moravan Lodge #128 at the historical Bohemian Hall, a Czech fraternal organization in Rossville, Kansas. Doug served as Tennessee State Deputy for the Knights of Columbus from 1981-1982. As a knight, Doug was instrumental in starting the March for Life , a pro life rally held at the Topeka State Capitol. He also founded the "In Solidarity With Our Priests - A Nite at The Ballpark" with the Kansas City Royals. Doug was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. 

Doug and his wife Pat celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December 2022 with their five children, Michelle Berry (Michael) of Topeka, Kansas, Doug Martinek (Amy) of Union City, Melissa Kuckelman (John) of Basel, Switzerland, Darren Martinek (Denise) of Mathis, Texas and Mandi Martinek (Austin Lemons) of Union City; and eleven grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny Martinek and Dwight Martinek.

1973 MEL Cross Country Champs

Tomorrow, Oct 12, is the final Mideast League Cross Country meet.  Fifty years ago the 1973 Bulldogs won the Mideast League Cross Country Meet.  The Bulldogs defended their 1972 title. The 1973 team got third in the Regional earning the team a place in the  1973 2A Cross Country Championships.

James Corpening Passes Away

James H. Corpening, 83, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2015 at the Rossville Healthcare and Rehab Center. He was born January 17, 1932 in Allen, KS, the son of Jess and Bertha Thomas Corpening.

He was married to Opal Tyson. She preceded him in death October 23, 1954. He married Norma Edmiston on February 25, 1955 and later divorced. He married Jessie Claypole-Webb December 7, 1963 and they were together 50 plus years until her passing February 19, 2014.

James is survived by his and Jessie’s children, John (Phyllis) Webb, Topeka; Don (Sandy) Webb, Berryton; Ron (Theresa) Webb, Topeka; Debbie (Greg) Stadler, Topeka; Debbie Pitts Osage City; Jim A. (Cheri) Corpening, Lawrence; Rita (Larry) Berry, Tecumseh; Pam (Wade) Handley, Burlington; Jim W. (Wendy) Corpening, Rossville, along with 33 grandkids, 64 great-grandkids and 9 great-great grandkids. He is also survived by his siblings, Freda Venning, Allen, KS, Lester Corpening, Kinsley, KS, Donald Corpening, Wichita, KS, Gerald Corpening, Liberty, MO, Victor Corpening Emporia, KS, along with many nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sons, Kenneth and Keith; siblings, Edna Bush, William ‘Bill’ Corpening, Laura Dains Fenton, Marvin Corpening, Bernice Pickens; one grandchild and four great-great grandchildren.

James served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Frankfort, Germany, receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Army Reserve in November, 1959.

He enjoyed bingo, bowling, fishing/hunting, cards, gardening, camping and family gatherings. They traveled all over and set up at fairs and ran several flea markets.

James worked for Meadow Gold and the Flour Mill in Topeka before becoming the owner of a Clark Oil Station, and he also managed other stations within Topeka.

James made many new friends at his final home in Rossville and will be deeply missed by his large family and many friends.

Memorial services will be held Monday, June 22, 2015 at Burlington United Methodist Church, 207 S. 6th Street, Burlington, Kansas at 10:00 a.m. Inurnment will follow the service.
