Mission Valley Triangular Volleyball

Rossville racked up two more victories with wins over Jackson Heights and Mission Valley at the Mission Valley Triangular on Sept 30.

Rossville defeated Jackson Heights 25-14, 22-25. 25-21 and then defeated Mission Valley 25-15, 25-17.

After withstanding a couple of challenges earlier in the season, the Rossville football team is building steam toward a bout with Silver Lake in two weeks, another obstacle in the path to a second straight 2A title. 

The Bulldogs steamrolled Oskaloosa Friday 62-0 to improve to 5-0. Two interception returns for touchdowns and an avalanche of points in the first quarter limited the action of the starters. But coach Derick Hammes and his veteran players know what it takes to win the ultimate prize. Hammes said his players embrace the process, even on a night when the starters spend most of the night on the sideline. 

“To our kids' credit, we talk about the process,” Hammes said. “The fact that we play well when there could be a letdown, that means that the kids are taking the task at hand seriously and they’re preparing hard and doing a good job. By doing that, when you do have a big game, it’s ordinary and it’s not such a big deal.” 

The Bulldogs have a couple of big games ahead. They face Pleasant Ridge, a team receiving votes for the 2A top ten, next Friday. And two weeks away looms “The War on 24,” the annual clash with Silver Lake, another perennial state contender. 

Hammes and the Bulldogs had to replace 11 starters from last year’s title team. He wasn’t sure how well the new group would gel, but he could look to all-state quarterback Torrey Horak to ease the transition. 

“He’s been a four-year starter, and three of them at quarterback,” Hammes said of Horak. “He’s really improved every year. He’s gotten better at something each and every year. He’s one of those kids that we want to get the fullest out of. He’s had a great career, but we want to keep it going as long as we can.” 

Horak accounted for over 3,000 yards of offense and 55 touchdowns last season. His stats are down this year because of spending so much time on the sideline during blowouts. But Horak said he feels good about the development of this new version of the Bulldogs. 

“It’s been fun,” Horak said. “I feel like we’ve got some younger guys who have made strides the past couple of weeks. Four out of six of our skill position guys are new this year, and they have done real well. The offensive line is doing great. I feel like we’re starting to mesh real well as a team right now. 

“Coach Hammes and I talked (recently) about how the last couple of weeks have been big for us. We just continue to get better every day.” 

Horak is following in the footsteps of his older brother, Tucker, who led Rossville to back-to-back state championships in 2014 and 2015 and is now a standout at Pittsburg State. Torrey has the benefit of having seen what it takes, and that such success is attainable. But he said he doesn’t feel pressure to be like his brother. 

“It’s nice. We talked about my just making my own legacy,” Torrey Horak said. “I’m not trying to follow in his footsteps.” 

Through five games, Horak has passed for 685 yards and two touchdowns, and has rushed for 605 yards and two more scores.  

The team’s second-leading rusher is senior Corey Catron, who has amassed 375 yards on the ground, with 10 touchdowns. Junior Kade Perine leads the team with 253 yards receiving on just 11 receptions.  

The second-leading receiver, Tagen Kippes, is also a ballhawk on the defensive side. He scored on a 30-yard interception return and also on a 35-yard pass reception Friday against Oskaloosa. 

Hammes has led the Bulldogs to four state titles since his arrival in 2013. But he said every season is different. Though he knows what it takes to get to the finish line, he said it’s hard to gauge where this team stands right now. 

“It’s a hard comparison. I just know that every team has (its own) potential,” Hammes said. “What we try to do is bring every team to their fullest potential. It’s process-driven here. That’s been a buzzword for us. We’ve got to get into the process of getting better and the process of preparing, and the results will happen if we do that.

“I don’t know how to compare this team to other teams, but I know that this team has a good potential and we want to meet it.”

 The RHS girls golf team sent 3 players to the Jeff West Invitational on Sept. 27 at he Village Greens Golf Club..  Jaymee Woodward finished 28th with a 122.  Emily Hatina was 29th with a 123 and Brinley Pottorf was 38th with a 139.

Fred Davis (62) Passes Away

Fred H. Davis, of Harrisonville, MO died on September 26, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Lee’s Summit, MO. While born in Topeka, he spent most of his growing up years on a farm north of Rossville, Kansas. Being a farm-boy, he learned the value of hard work. He developed a love for singing while driving a tractor, he said, because tractors in those days did not have radios. Later he sang solos at Christian gatherings and was a song leader in more than one church.

He came to personal faith in Christ through Topeka Youth For Christ while still in high school. After graduating from Rossville Rural High School in 1962, he attended Kansas State University where he graduated with a degree in Chemistry and Secondary Education. He was active in Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) at K-State and was chapter president his senior year. He also attended numerous IVCF camps at Bear Trap Ranch in Colorado Springs; Urbana Missionary Conferences in Champagne, IL, etc.

Fred had a contagious sense of humor and a laugh where his face would turn red and his shoulders shake. He was like an old pair of shoes that wore extremely well.

He was also mechanically inclined and loved to tinker and fix things, especially cars. Once he rebuilt the carburetor on his car, and when he put the lid over the carburetor air filter, unbeknown to him, a fly got trapped inside the carburetor and the head of the fly got sucked into one of the fuel inlets which hindered the flow of gas and made the car run rough. After trying unsuccessfully numerous times to solve the problem Fred finally took it to a professional mechanic who discovered what happened. He never did live that down.

Fred later attended Midwestern Baptists Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO and became music director and educational director at several Baptist churches. During this time he met Ruth Krauss and they were married in August of 1969. In August they celebrated their 52th anniversary. She survives in Harrisonville, MO.

Fred was way ahead of the curve when it came to computers. He started his own computer type-setting business where he would do business cards, fliers, brochures and about anything printed for individuals or businesses.

He and Ruth enjoyed traveling to visit family in Kansas and Texas, as well as attending Christian concerts at Silver Dollar City and in Kansas City. Their "best ever" trip was to Israel a few years ago.

One of the most life-changing things in Fred’s life occurred when he attended Focus Seminary in Kansas City, which was a personal-growth seminar patterned after a similar seminar founded by “Dr. Phil” McGraw (before he became a TV celebrity). Soon another similar, but more Christian-based seminar, began in Kansas City called Grace Adventure. Fred was on the leadership team of Grace Adventure for many years, where he impacted literally hundreds of lives. He was dearly loved.

After semi-retiring from Grace Adventure, he worked part time for the Ford dealership in Harrisonville delivering and picking up cars from all around the country. He helped plant the Abiding Love Baptist Church in Harrisonville and was its first pastor. He and Ruth later joined and became active members at First Baptist Church in Lee’s Summit.

A graveside celebration of life service for Fred will be held at the Rossville Cemetery, about 20 miles west of Topeka, at a later date to be announced.

Rossville Lady Dawgs Get Volleyball Wins

     The Rossville volleyball team added two more wins against Riley Co. on Sept 28 bringing their season record to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the MEL. The scores were 24-14, 25-17 and then 20-25, 25-21, 26-24.

The Rossville girls took first place at the Royal Valley Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 26 at Hoyt City Park. 

Foster finished first with a time of 21:48.14 and was one of three Rossville runners in the top five along with Alexis Zabala (2nd, 22:17.40) and Cassie Fund (5th, 23:34.46)

LaDorna Rae Smith Passes Away

    

    St. Marys—LaDorna Rae “Corky” Smith, 90, St. Marys, passed away Friday, September 24, 2021 at the St. Marys Manor.

     She was born October 31, 1930, in Lola Township Cherokee County, Kansas to Paul A. and Beulah G. Crane Richards.  She was raised in Oswego and graduated from Oswego High School in 1948.  She had lived in the St. Marys community since 1951.

     Corky was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church where she was very active.  She enjoyed helping with the annual Turkey Dinner.  Corky and her husband Jim loved to dance, play cards and spend time with their family and friends.  You could find them frequently on the dance floor at the Moose Lodge Lounge in Topeka.  You might catch them playing a round of golf at the St. Marys course where she was an active member.

    Corky loved her kid, grandkids and great-grandkids and was a wonderful mom, grandma, and mentor to them all.  She loved to cook and was famous for her delicious meals.  The family gathered often at her home and guests were always welcomed.  She was very talented and crafty as is witnessed by the comforter size afghans she crochedted for nearly all of her grandkids and gorgeous ceramic Christmas trees she made and painted for each child’s family.  She loved to swim and her grandchildren remember her teaching them to swim.    Flower and vegetable gardening were two of her favorite pastimes.  When the clubhouse was built at the St. Marys Golf Course she and other volunteers designed and planted the landscaping.  She served as a Girl Scout Leader for the  St. Marys’ troop when her girls were involved.

     Corky was a nickname given to her as a child and it fit her perfectly.  She loved to have fun, be ornery and make people laugh.  She was  always full of advice for anyone that would listen.  It would be hard to find a person she knew that didn’t have a story or two to tell about their relationship with her.

     She married James W. Smith on June 12, 1949 at Oswego.  He preceded her in death on June 2, 2004; she was also preceded by her parents, a sister, Paula Middelton and a son Gary Smith on October 31, 2012.

     Survivors include her son, Michael Smith (Sherry), St. Marys; three daughters. Linda K. Dohrman (Rick), Delia, Vicki S. Lightfoot, (Bobby), Blaine, and Donna L. Simecka (Alan), St. Marys; a daughter-in-law, Dona Smith, Maple Hill; her brother, J.A. Richards; her sister, Winnie Ellis, Maple Hill;  23 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren.

     Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 1, 2021, at the St. Marys United Methodist Church followed by graveside services at 3:30 P.M.at the Oswego Cemetery, Oswego, Kansas.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, September 30, 2021 at Piper Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Marys United Methodist Church and sent in care of the funreal home.  To leave online condolences go to www.piperfuneralhome.com.
