Robert Martinek Passes Away

Robert Eugene "Bob" Martinek, 89, passed away in Las Cruces, NM Friday night July 13, 2018 at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice having resided there a short time.

Bob was born August 10, 1928 in Delia, KS to Agnes and William Martinek. He grew up with a slightly older brother Bill and younger brother Orville and sister Louise on their family farm. He and Bill were inseparable growing up, so much so that when Bill entered first grade Bob had to go too, thereby being in the same class throughout their school years.

He married Nancy Frey on April 16, 1950 in Topeka, KS while both worked for the Santa Fe railroad in Topeka, Bob in the railyard and then the office.

He graduated from Silver Lake High School in Silver Lake, KS in 1945 where he was known for his athletic ability and many pranks pulled with friends. He attended Washburn University in Topeka for 1 1/2 years on a football scholarship, finishing his education at Kansas University in Lawrence, KS and earning a BSEE with a minor in Math. He enrolled at Kansas University on the GI bill after enlisting in the Air Force in 1951 and serving for 4 years attached to the Special Weapons Project. His service exposed him to the field of electronics which eventually became his life's work. After graduating from Kansas University in 1958 he and his young family moved back to Albuquerque, NM, having been stationed there in the service. He first worked for Sandia Corporation remaining there 3 years before joining Neely Enterprises in 1961, which eventually became a sales division of Hewlett Packard. During his tenure with Neely and Hewlett Packard he was named Salesman of the Month in 1965, promoted to Field Engineer in 1968 and moved from Albuquerque to Thousand Oaks, CA in early 1969, operating out of the North Hollywood office, then on to the Las Cruces office as manager in August 1969, retiring in 1986. 

He was a big sports fan, especially baseball - he & Nancy honeymooned in Chicago and attended a Cubs game - and enjoyed football and college basketball too. He tried out for a semi-pro baseball team prior to their marriage but the team disbanded due to infighting among the managers, leaving the team members stranded in Oklahoma City left to find their own way home. He and Nancy were avid bowlers for over 50 years. In Las Cruces he bowled in multiple leagues, served as league secretary many years, and bowled with the Chiles de Las Cruces and Las Cruces International Club. He and Nancy enjoyed traveling for bowling tournaments around the country and state, and he qualified for and bowled in many Senior National tournaments in the 75+ age group and the New Mexico Senior Olympics. They made many lifelong, awesome friends through bowling. Bob and Nancy traveled extensively in addition to that for bowling, visiting Spain and Morocco, multiple states, a 5 week self guided tour through 8 countries in Europe in 1984, Germany multiple times, England & Scotland, Sweden, Norway & Denmark, and cruised Alaska, the Caribbean & the Rhine River. They also enjoyed playing the slots at various casinos in New Mexico and Nevada. In earlier years he loved to fish with his brothers when visiting in Kansas and later with good friends from Las Cruces. At home Bob could be found taking meticulous care of their beautiful yard, conquering the daily crossword puzzle, sudoku and cryptoquip, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and avidly reading spy and intrigue novels, favorite authors being Clive Clussler, David Baldacci, Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum. 

Bob is survived by his wife of 68 years Nancy of Las Cruces, NM, daughter Mona Martinek of W Lafayette, IN, son Jay Martinek (Verena) of Schwalbach, Germany, grandchildren Sean, Samantha, and Macy Martinek of Schwalbach, Germany and great granddaughter Felicitas Luna also of Germany, brother Orville Martinek (Janet) of Silver Lake, KS, sister Louise Redmon of Silver Lake, KS, sister-in-law Donna Neuner of Topeka, KS, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was predeceased by father William (1981), brother Bill (1989) and mother Agnes (1994).

Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm, Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Getz Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm, Friday, July 20, 2018 at Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces, NM.

Tonya Heslet Wins Award

Washburn University Institute of Technology students recently won medals at the SkillsUSA Championships held in Louisville, Ky., with 22 of them finishing in the top five.

SkillsUSA Nationals is an annual event that involves more than 6,300 competitors from across the country who compete in 102 different trade, technical and leadership fields.

Among the winners were Cody Bayless and Cameron Smith, both of Topeka, and Tonya Heslet, of Rossville, competitors in the Community Service contest, post-secondary division, who earned a bronze medal.  Bayless graduated in May from the auto collision program, Smith graduated in May from the auto service program and Heslet graduated in May from the auto service technician program.

Ruth (Diehl) (35) Martinek Passes Away

Ruth Agnes Diehl Martinek, 101, Topeka, died July 13, 2018 at Midland Hospice.

She was born February 19, 1917 in Stockton, Kansas, daughter of Myrtle and Frank Diehl and graduated from Rossville High School in 1935. She spent most of her life in the Rossville and Delia communities as well as Wimberely and Canton, Texas.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia.

She married Bennie Joseph Martinek on August 24, 1937 in Delia, Kansas. He died March 4, 1995. Two sons preceded her in death, Bennie (Sonny) V. Martinek and Dwight J. Martinek. Siblings preceding her in death were George and Earl Diehl, Alice Gentry, Ralph Nitzche and Ina Marney.

Survivors include son, Douglas F. Martinek (Pat), Topeka, grand-children Michelle (Mike) Berry, Doug (Amy) Martinek, Melissa (John) Kuckelman, Darren (Denise) Martinek and Mandi Martinek and Dustin (Robin) Martinek and great-grandchildren Jacob and Joseph Berry, Caroline and Ben Martinek, Jack and Mary Margaret Kuckelman, Christian, Courtlyn, and Cameron Martinek and Madison and Davis Martinek.

Visitation will be Wednesday July 18, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 9:00 am with a Rosary following at 9:30 am. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Mary’s. Randall Scott (65) Passes Away

Randall William Scott, 70, Phoenix, Arizona, (formerly of Topeka, Kansas) passed away Friday, July 13, 2018.

Randy was born December 29, 1947, in Corning, Kansas the son of Gilbert and Rosalia Broxterman Scott. He was a 1965 graduate of Rossville High School. Randy was a Vietnam veteran who served our country in the US Navy.

In 1980 he moved to Phoenix and in 1981, was united in marriage to Pamela Sue Waldo, enjoying over 37 years together. 

Randy was employed by Sanderson Ford in Glendale, Arizona and by Chapman BMW in Chandler, Arizona, from which he retired. Randy like fast cars and Harleys. He was overly generous helping large numbers of family and friends whenever needed. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.

Grateful to have shared Randy’s life are his wife, Pam, Phoenix; daughter, Kelley Kuta (Jason) Topeka; siblings, Marsha DeDonder, St. Marys KS, Keith Scott (Cindi) Mesa AZ, Sheryl Bahr (Dick) Rossville KS, Glen Scott (Holly) Tampa FL, and Ralph Scott (Lauri) Shawnee KS. 

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Michelle Cowger, brother-in-law, Frank DeDonder and sister-in-law, Cindy Scott.

A Celebration of Randy’s Life will be Monday, July 16, at 11 a.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614, where family will greet friends one hour prior to service.

Everett Hoobler Passes Away

”Everett A. "Ol Ev" Hoobler, 89, passed away late Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Oakley Place of Rossville.

He was born January 4, 1929 in the Turkey Creek Community, Wabaunsee County Kansas, the son of Vernon P. and Mary M. Rake Hoobler. He attended Turkey Creek and St. Marys grade schools and St. Marys High School until moving to Rossville where he graduated. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He lived in the Rossville community where he worked for Leo Berry Irrigation and Grain Systems. In 1961, Everett and his family moved to St. Marys when he was asked to take over the John Deere Dealership and hardware store. He brought the irrigation business to St. Marys. He and his son owned and operated Hoobler Drilling for 30 years. Everett was an Auctioneer and owned Hoobler Auction Service; he also was a real-estate agent. His greatest love was auctioneering.

Everett was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus at Flush. He was a founding member and helped raise money for the Rock Springs 4-H Ranch. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Shrine and OES. Everett was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville and Aubert-Wall VFW in St. Marys. He enjoyed golfing, and was instrumental in starting the St. Marys golf course. He had been a member of the Manhattan Country Club and was a Cat Backer.

He was united in marriage to Erma L. Wolfe on February 9, 1951 at Topeka. She preceded him in death on September 25, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Lloyd, Ray, Albert and Dwight Hoobler; his sister, Mildred Ronsee.

Survivors include two brothers, Forest Hoobler, Topeka and Lester Hoobler, Seattle, WA; his children, Dan (Angie) Hoobler, Wamego and Jayne (Doug) Wolf, Hope; granddaughters, Sara (Dale) Nordlund, Valley Falls, Olivia Wolf, Wichita, Valery Wolf, York County, Maine and Elizabeth (Chris) Giestina, Loveland CO.; twin great-granddaughters.

Military Graveside Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery with interment to follow. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Margaret Sumner Passes Away

    Margaret Janice (Moore) Sumner, 89, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Midland Hospice. 
    She was born in Delia, KS on January 13, 1929 to Cora Mildred (Zickefooose) and Cyrus Moore. She graduated from Delia High School. She was a homemaker and worked many years in food service for USD 321. On June 7, 1947 she married Charles (Bob) Sumner. They have two sons: Dennis and Vernon and one daughter Nancy. Bob and Margaret raised their family in Delia, KS. Margaret was a very involved member of the Sacred Heart Church. She was also a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing cards and dominos with her friends as well as gardening and sewing.   In 1990 Bob and Margaret moved to St. Marys where they became members of the Immaculate Conception Church. Bob & Margaret always attended the grandchildren and great grandchildren’s events.   For 20 years Bob and Margaret spent their winters in Texas and enjoyed their time there with new and old friends. The last 4 winters they traveled to Phoenix, AZ. Margaret led a very loving, family and faith oriented life.        Survivors include Sons: Dennie (Kathy), Topeka, Vern (Janet), Rossville, Daughter: Nancy (Mike), Phoenix, AZ. Brothers, Jim Moore and Cy Moore, Iowa,  Sister, Carol Moore (Nebraska) Brother-in-laws: Don Sumner (Peg), Topeka and Bill (Kay) Sumner, Topeka. 8 Grandkids, 11 Great-Grandkids, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, 4 brothers: Lloyd (Blackie) Moore, David Moore, Tom Moore and Paul Moore. 1 Sister: Patricia Moore.  
    Margaret will lie in state after 2:00 P.M.at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys, KS on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 from with a visitation starting at 5:30 PM and a Rosary following at 7:00 PM. A biologist’s book about baseball has been placed on the 2018 Kansas Notable Books list.

Fort Hays State University’s biological sciences lab coordinator Mark Eberle’s “Kansas Baseball, 1858-1941” was placed on the list by state librarian Eric Norris.

The list contains a selection of 15 books reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Kansas and features quality titles with wide public appeal that are either written by Kansans or highlights a Kansas-related topic.

“Kansas Baseball,” published in April 2017, describes the nature of early baseball. Eberle became interested in the topic in grade school, playing in his hometown neighborhood of Olathe and following the Athletics when their home was Kansas City instead of California.

Biologist Eberle said the baseball book was kind of accidental. “I was just curious about which ballparks in Kansas were the oldest, and it grew from there.”

“I was just doing the baseball research for the pleasure I derived from it, with no intention of writing a book, so it is humbling to have that work recognized,” said Eberle.

Larks Park in Hays, one of the oldest ballparks in Kansas, got him started.

“Larks Park, completed in 1940 and officially dedicated in 1941, was No. 10 on the list of oldest ballparks when I started looking three years ago, and became No. 9 after Independence demolished their 1919 grandstand,” he said. “Larks Park will soon become No. 8 after Wichita tears down Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, which was built in 1934.”

Town team baseball was widespread in 1858-1941, which is why Eberle chose the time frame.

“Virtually every town had a team at some point that played against other town teams,” he said. “These teams were a mix of amateur, semipro and professional clubs, but unfortunately this was also the period when most teams were segregated by race or gender.”

Some chapters describe baseball played by teams of women, African Americans, Native Americans and Mexican-Americans, while other chapters describe minor league teams and major league tours through Kansas.

The book, ending with a discussion on the disappearance of town teams after World War II, describes early baseball and histories of the nine ballparks built prior to the war that are still used in Kansas: Rossville, Kinsley, Wichita, Garden City, Chanute, Larned, Junction City, El Dorado and Hays.

Eberle has co-written two other books, also published by the University Press of Kansas, which represents all six Kansas Board of Regents institutions. The other books are based on his professional life as a biologist.

Eberle and Joe Tomelleri, FHSU alumnus, wrote “Fishes of the Central United States” in 1990 featuring hundreds of Tomelleri’s color illustrations of fish. An expanded second edition was published in 2011.

“Kansas Fishes,” published in 2014, was a collaborative effort organized by biologists from each of the state universities and state agencies that work with fish.

“Among the 60 experts who contributed to the book, nine have connections to Fort Hays State University, including myself,” said Eberle.

Dr. William Stark, FHSU professor of biological sciences, Dr. Nicholas Mandrak, former professor of biological sciences, and FHSU alumni Dr. Donald Cloutman, Guy Ernsting, Jordan Hofmeier, Eric Johnson, Jason Lugnibill and Joe Tomelleri were contributors to “Kansas Fishes.”

Marcial Lambert Passes Away

Marcial A. Lambert, 89, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018 at a Topeka hospital.

She was born June 7, 1929 at Tecumseh the daughter of Isaac S. and Jessie L. Melton Robinson. Marcial graduated from Seaman High School and attended Clark's Business School. She had lived in the Rossville and Delia communities before moving to Lake Wabaunsee.

Marcial worked for Kaw Valley USD No. 321 many years as the treasurer retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church and had attended the Eskridge United Church and Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church at the lake.

On June 30, 1948 she was united in marriage to Elmer W. Lambert. He preceded her in death on November 18, 2002. A son, Terry W. Lambert died September 17, 1989. Marcial was also preceded in death by siblings, Iona, Lois, Doris, Elizabeth, Malcolm, Loren and Bill.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindy (Richard) Langworthy, Lake Wabaunsee; a sister, Ina Patterson, Topeka; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. Lambert will lie in state on Monday, July 9, 2018 at the church where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.
