Buhlers Face Each Other Friday

Through more than 30 years of marriage and husband Steve Buhler’s long career as a high school football coach, Shelly Buhler has been one of his biggest supporters.

On Friday night, though, Shelly will be cheering for the other guys, and Steve is just fine with that.

Shelly Buhler, a longtime Shawnee County Commissioner, is in her first year as Hayden’s president and will be on the Wildcats’ side of the field when 1-1 Hayden hosts 2-0 Washburn Rural, coached by Steve.

“She’s a very dedicated person, she’s a very loyal person,″ Steve Buhler said of Shelly. “She’s already told me, ‘I hope you have a great year, just not this one week.’ ”

“We’re both going to be professional about this and we’re both going to be doing our jobs to the best of our ability,″ Shelly said.

Hayden-Washburn Rural has turned into one of the city’s top rivalries, but Steve Buhler said the Buhlers have tried to approach this week as just another game.

“There’s not much talk about it,″ Steve said. “Shelly doesn’t worry about what I’m doing over here per se and she’s got enough going on that we really don’t talk much business. And this sounds crazy, but we really don’t talk a lot of football.

“I think both of us are going to give each other a little extra space this week, because joking around or whatever with people and everything else, we don’t want that to be part of the equation. We just want it to be about our kids vs. the Hayden kids and the programs and we’ll be happy with a great ballgame.″

Football has always been a big part of life in the Buhler household, with Steve and Shelly’s sons, Mitch and Matt, starring for Steve at Rossville and playing at Washburn.

The Buhler’s daughter, Maura, is also involved in sports and is participating in track and field at Benedictine.

But Steve and Shelly Buhler said their jobs are about much more than just athletics.

“In the scheme of the education process and what she’s involved in and what I’m involved in, the game is important, but at the same time there’s a lot bigger issues involved with the schools and the kids and all those kinds of things,″ Steve said. “That’s why we’re involved in it. She loves Hayden as a school and wants all their programs to do really well.″

“The fact of the matter is we’re both supportive of education and both supportive of students and student-athletes,″ Shelly said. “We both went to a catholic college (Benedictine) and met there and both of us I think have lived our faith and served our communities in a number of different ways. It just so happens that we’re in these places at this point in time and he’s supportive of Washburn Rural and I’m definitely supportive of Hayden and the great tradition of Hayden.″

The Buhlers are no strangers to needing to temporarily put family allegiances aside for football.

Shelly’s brother, Matt Westerhaus, is the athletic director at Junction City, which has faced Centennial League rival Rural several times during Steve’s six seasons at the school.

In fact, Rural and Junction City faced off last Friday, with the Junior Blues rallying for a 34-24 victory, their first over the Blue Jays under Buhler.

“It’s kind of funny because sometimes my mom and dad will pick a side (to sit on), you kind of have to,″ Shelly said. “My dad was a coach for a long time and we’re competitive, don’t get me wrong, but when it comes to family I think we’re all just supportive of everybody being fair and being professional and that comes just from being around family that’s been involved in athletics for a long, long time.″

While Friday will be a big night for both Hayden and Washburn Rural, Shelly Buhler admits that in some ways she’ll be happy to get the game finished and things returning to normal.

“I will be probably glad when it’s behind us,″ she said. “I think it makes it a little more intense because Steve is coaching this particular sport, but we’ll wake up the next day and we’ll both go back to doing our jobs and hopefully doing our jobs well.″

Girls Golf Season Under Way

The Rossville High girls golf teams' season is underway. At the Jeff West Scramble event the team of Leah Hudson and Lizzy Foster came in 5th with a score of 90. The next outing was at the Jeff West Open, in which the team made a very good showing. All four players attending the meet had a nine hole score in the 50's: Jenna Rodehorst 53, Sydney Wonnell 53, Lizzy Foster 58, and Leah Hudson 59. The most recent meet took place at Wamego Country Club. Playing well on the very difficult course were Jenna Rodehorst 62 and Sydney Wonnell 62.

Members of this years' team are Lizzy Foster, Payton Bolte, Jenna Rodehorst, Leah Hudson, Sydney Wonnell, Alexandra Broughton, Charlotte Rahn, Hailey Steele, Kayla Davis and Kendall Abernathy.

Christi McKenzie (85) Is New Library Director

Please join the Rossville Community Library Board in welcoming new Library Director Christi McKenzie. As Director, Christi brings more than two decades of service in Rossville schools and a lifetime of contributions to the Rossville community.

"We're looking forward to see what new ideas Christi brings to the Rossville Community Library. She has always been an active member of the community, and we're excited to have her join our library team," said Board member Sarene McCrory. Christi said she looks forward to the opportunity to build upon the strength of programs¦ and connect and listen to the needs of patrons.

Christi graduated from RHS in 1985. Her husband is Alan McKenzie from the same class. Their children are Jordan, Scott and Nicholas. She has had a career of over 20 years at RGS and RHS. Recently was the At-risk Coordinator, Student Council sponsor and Freshman class sponsor and TASMAD adult leadership team. She currently serves on the Rossville City Council as Park Commissioner. She also is a volunteer for Rossville PRIDE and serves as president. She is also a member of Rossville Community Foundation. and a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.

Christi began her new role September 4, 2018. Make a point to come by Rossville Community Library or reach out to Christi to welcome her and offer your support to her as the library enters its next era of commitment to the Rossville community.

Notes: Played in muddy conditions which limited both offenses, the War on 24 showdown between Silver Lake and Rossville didn’t let the conditions detract from the drama. The Eagles built a 17-7 lead, but had to fight off the Bulldawgs late with Rossville missing a game-tying field goal with five minutes left as Silver Lake held on for a 17-14 win.

Elzora (Marney) Homan Passes Away

Elzora M. Homan, 82, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018.

She was born October 23, 1935, in McFarland, Kansas, to James "Ivan "and Mamie (Belcher) Marney. Elzora attended Rossville Schools. She completed requirements for the GED, while working and raising four children, earning a Topeka High School diploma.

Elzora married James E. Homan November 1, 1952. He preceded her in death October 29, 2016.

She worked first at Topeka State Hospital, then at Kansas Neurological Institute, before returning to Topeka State as administrator of medical records. She retired from this position in 1993.

Elzora enjoyed fishing, doing crossword puzzles, and solving crimes on her favorite show, Law and Order SVU. She especially enjoyed long drives in the country looking for deer and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert and James Marney and a sister, Toria Marney.

Survivors include son, Mike Homan (Marilyn); daughters Judi Kutzke (Bob); Barbara Kutzke (Randy) all of Topeka and daughter Pattie Homan of Silver Lake, Kansas; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother Benjamin "Bud" Marney (Letha) of Scottsdale, Arizona; brother-in-law Ray Homan; sister-in-law Mary Homan and her beloved dog, Bella.

The family thanks Midland Hospice and Stormont Vail Hospital for the care they gave their mother.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 11, at Prairie Home Cemetery, 35th and Menoken Rd., just northwest of Topeka.

Elzora was a member of the Kansas Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Helping Hands Humane Society of Topeka or Midland Care Hospice. Online guestbook and obituary at www.kansascremation.com.
