Baseball Team Wins Two (Updated)

    The RHS baseball team picked up two more wins,  defeating Kansas City Christian by scores of 16-0 and 13-1 to up their record to 8-0.

    Nick Reesor,  M. Matumoto, and Christian Roduner each had three hits in the game.  Nick had three RBIs and Matumoto had two RBIs.  Tucker Horak had two hits (2 RBIs),  one of hem a triple.
    Jacob Bradshaw was the winning pitcher allowing three hits and one earned run while getting six strike-outs in the five innings on the mound.

    Jack Steckel and Thatcher Horak led the batters with three hits each while Tucker Horak and Christian Roduner had two hits each.  Tucker and Thatcher each had one triple.  

    Jack Steckel pitched all five innings of the shortened game allowing only one hit while getting four strike-outs.

Rossville Library Book Sale Coming

You can volunteer for the Sale! From sorting books to staffing the sales table... We could use some help to make this year's booksale the best one yet! Wednesday, May 6th, at 5:00 we will be unloading boxes at the American Legion on Main Street. Thursday we will be sorting books onto tables at the Legion; Friday we could use help running the sale; and Saturday we need help running the sale and then boxing up leftover books at 12:00. Summer Reading Registration begins Saturday, May 30th, from 10-2. We have some special giveways that day first come, first served!

The Rossville girls track team finished 5th of eleven teams at the Rossville Invitational on April 27.

Rossville Man Robbed in Topeka

      Topeka police were investigating Friday after three people reported they were robbed by three men wearing masks and armed with handguns.
      Lt. Ron Gish said in a news release officers responded just before noon to S.E. 23rd and Michigan Avenue. The victims — a 67-year-old Tecumseh man, a 57-year-old Tecumseh woman and a 22-year-old Rossville man — told police they were working in the area when three black men wearing masks approached them.
      All three assailants fired their handguns into the air and yelled at the victims to get on the ground, the victims told police. The assailants then reportedly took items from the victims’ pockets and searched their vehicles, Gish said.
      The victims weren’t injured. The assailants were last seen leaving the area on foot toward the south, Gish said.

Jere Miller Passes Away

      Jere F. Miller, 82, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Community Hospital in St. Marys.   
      He was born October 12, 1932 at Topeka, the son of Frank A."Fritz" and Germaine Ronnau Miller.  Jere grew up in St. Marys and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1950.  He served in the US Army.   
      Jere worked alongside his parents at the Miller Department Store in St. Marys for many years before his retirement.  He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys and Knights of Columbus Council No. 657.  Jere was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville.   He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed traveling   
      He was preceded in death by his parents.    Among survivors are cousins, John P. Ronnau, Judy DeVader, Mary Lee Fields, Charles Ronnau, Robert Ronnau and Marilyn Alberg.   
      Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 1, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys.   Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys.   Mr. Miller will lie in state from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where there will be a rosary recited at 7:00 P.M.   Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Marys Manor Bus Fund and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.   Online condolences may be sent to www.piperfuneralhome.com.

Loretta (DeVader) Scott Passes Away

    Loretta A. DeVader Scott, 58, of Rossville,  went home to her Heavenly Father, Sunday, April 26, 2015.
She was born January 12, 1957 at Topeka, the daughter of Joseph C. and Catherine L. Martin DeVader.  Loretta grew up in the Emmett community graduating from Emmett Grade School and St. Marys High School in 1976.
    She was united in marriage to Shelby Scott in 1998 at St. Marys.  He preceded her in death on October 22, 2004.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Ronald and a sister, Roberta K. DeVader-Dale
    Survivors include four brothers, Larry, Dave, Robert and Gerald “Chief” DeVader; three sisters, Edith Fuller, Marcia Wagner and Ranae Baker; along with many nieces and nephews.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 30, 2015 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.  Loretta will lie in state from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the church where there will be a rosary recited at 8:00 P.M.  Private inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Emmett at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.

John Floersch (75) Passes Away

    John R. Floersch 58, Lake Clinton, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
    He was born February 4, 1957 at Topeka, the son of Joseph and Dolores Dohrman Floersch.  John grew up in the Delia community and graduated from Rossville High School in 1975.

    He owned and operated Lawn Care Plus Lawn Service in Johnson County.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors and cooking.  He enjoyed being with family and spending time with friends.  John was a member of the Catholic Church.
    John was united in marriage to Sheila Copeland, they later divorced.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Joe on August 13, 2003 and his sister, Karen Crow on March 31, 2015.
    Survivors include his mother, Dolores Floersch, Rossville; his son, Austin (Misty) Floersch. Olathe; his daughter, Emmy (Jason) Sedlacek, Rossville; a sister, Kathy (Bob) Olejnik, Rossville; a brother-in-law, Joe Crow, Delia; four grandsons, Caiden Musick, Ethan, Colton and Mason Floersch; 2 nephews and 3 nieces and his beloved dog, Reggie.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Marie (Smatla) (40) Deveney Obituary

    Marie E. (Smatla) DeVeney, 93, of Raytown, MO passed away April 22, 2015. Funeral service 10am Mon., April 27th at Floral Hills Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior. Burial following in Floral Hills Cemetery.

    Marie was born March 31, 1922 in Maple Hill, KS. The family moved to Rossville, KS where she graduated high school in 1940. Marie worked at American Optical Co. in Topeka, KS. She later moved to Kansas City, MO where she worked at TWA & then Chevrolet Motor Division Leeds, Kansas City, MO.
    Marie married William E. DeVeney, who preceded her in death in 1975. She is also preceded in death by her 2 sisters & 5 brothers. Marie is survived by her daughters, Denise Horgan & Kristi Seigler (Walt); a sister, Lydia Carl; three grandchildren, Sandy Butler (Tony), Matt Horgan & Lori Seigler; five great grandkids, Jenna, Rayne, Mason & Aubrey Butler & Tori Horgan as well as many nieces & nephews.

Marie (Smatla) DeVeney Passes Away

Marie (Smatla) DeVeney passed away yesterday, 22 April 2015,.  She was 1 of 8 children  born to Thomas & Marie (Juran) Smatla.   This leaves only one  remaining sibling --Lydia (Smatla) Carl.     In this family picture, taken in 1936 at the old "Joy Place"  West of Rossville.     Marie is on the  far-left,, in front of Lydia (Smatla) Carl, in the leaf-print dress. Lady Dawgs Win Marysville Final

     The Lady Dawgs continued their dominance on the diamond picking up a 14-3 win over Marysville in the night cap of their double header to up their record to 11-1 with their only loss being the 7-6 Manhattan game.  This second game required six innings to get the required 11 point lead for a "mercy win."
     Taylor Kirk and Lora Shinn led in hits with two each.  Britnee Zemek had two walks.  Taylor Brecheisen led the RBIs with four and Zemek had three.
     Amanda Hill pitched all six innings getting 28 first pitch strikes and ten strike-outs,  while allowing seven hits in the win.
